Would Nexxtech be a trustworthy brand? That USB Hub looks a little too cheap to believe.

And you know that saying "You get what you pay for"

Im not a big spender but i also dont want to waste my time + money.

Do USB hubs some time influence the transfer speed (ie if i were to plug in an external harddrive would the speed slow down?)

    Thanks!

I've owned quite a USB hubs and all of them are equally as reliable, including the generic branded units. I'm currently using a generic 7-port USB hub I purchased from ebay and it's still working perfect even after 3 years. ;)

Ive never haerd of Nexxtech myself.

As David stated, some generics will work good, but i usually dont have good luck with generics. I prefer somewhat of reputable name brand. But thats my opinion. :D

Id fully trust Kensington, they have excellent quality. That one is just a great deal i found on a name brand. ;)

$14 too cheap for a bus powered USB hub ?? You can find a generic hub for even less than $5, there is nothing much inside it to make it expensive. Manufacturing cost of ANY such hub shouldn’t be more than a 2~3 dollars. Whatever you pay extra is for the brand name and packaging.

BTW if you are planning to connect many high power USB devices (Hard disks, external optical drives, USB chargers etc..) then better to buy an externally powered USB hub.

im only planning on connecting 1 external harddrive and 1 USB memory stick.

Should i really get an external? or would the ones which you plug into your laptop do just fine?

id go with a self powered hub. you do not have to use it with the power cord if you are on the go, however, extra power draw = more wear on your lappy. why not do everything you can to make it wear less?

    i have a 7 port self-powered (2.5a) D-link, got it for 20 bucks from compusa about a year ago. i have
2 external hdds (1 full sized EIDE, 1 SATA)
    Gaming mouse
    Gaming Keyboard
    Phone Charger
    Game Pad
    Joystick
