Recommendations?
My old G5 crapped out on me. The "mouse4" key no longer works, so it's time for something new. All I ever heard about are razer's, so that will probably be my next purchase. Any good deals/sales going anywhere? Any sites to check out? Which model should I go with?

Razer does some good mice, no doubt....if you want to check some of them out, the Deathadder or Lachesis would be the ones to look at (the latter coming in at least 2 versions).
I use a MX518 though which is roughly the same size as your old G5, but cheaper ( link here).
If possible though, try and go to a retailer (Best Buy or wherever), where you can actually get your hands on some mice to see which one feels best. -
It appears one of the "big" difference between the Lachesis and Deathadder is the "dpi" of each mouse. The Deathadder is rated at 1800dpi and the Lachesis is rated at 4000dpi. Is there a noticeable difference?

Wait till Black Friday, i also have a thread but i think im gonna hold out.

Chances are you are going to get a ton of replies telling you to get a logitech g9 or a razer deathadder. They are good mice. But two things I recommend are going to the store and trying some mice out and to not overlook mice that arent logitech or razer.
I have a ocz eclipse mouse and I love it. Cost me 25 bucks and has every thing I could want in a mouse. Wired so it will never need batteries, adjustable weights, twin lazers with 2600 dpi, toggle swith for dpi switching on the fly, multiple profiles with led color indicators, 5 buttons, and it feels great. -
Logitech G9, SteelSeries Ikari Laser, or the new SteelSeries Xai Laser.
I own and use the first two. I want to try a Xai out as well when I get the chance. -
Here are some nice ones cheap!!

I would go with the new DeathAdder. It's now 3,500 DPI instead of 1,800. DPI is a measurement of how precise a mouse is. Higher = more precise.
I made a thread with some pics and a review here in the Accessories forum, check it out. I would say the DeathAdder is the best choice if you're comfortable with the shape of the G5. It's the best ergonomic mouse I've ever used.
For the record, your old G5 has 2,000 DPI. -
If you're willing to wait for a deal I got my G9 earlier this year for $35 after a couple of crazy rebates.
-
-
If you're a palmgripper, I really like my steelseries Ikari
-
On mouse its better to go test them frist at least the feeling n grip on your hand, specially considering how wierd the shape n sizes are on some. If you like the shape of the G5 then a safe bet would be MX518/G500, but you might also like the design of Deathadder or Ikari, but for me im sold already with logitech feel and design, so ill just go on purchasing the same shape as long as they keep making them.
Performance/Price based i would still go with either of the following,
Logitech MX 518 $40
Razer DeathAdder $45
SteelSeries Ikari Optical $49
If you willing to spend some more consider also,
Logitech Gaming Mouse G500 $65
Razer Deathadder 3500 $57
SteelSeries Ikari Laser $63 -

Pity, too. I loved the feel of it. Considering RMAing it, but OCZ mice have left a bad taste in my mouth.
As for mice, +1 for another G5. -
-
The G5 got updated with the G500 maybe you could check that out.

I am using this, ATM. I hereby declare it to be the best mouse ever made. *

looks to me like:

i highly suggest the razer deathadder. ive been gaming with it over a year now and i have never felt a better one. it fits my hand perfectly, the buttons are perfectly placed, and its very accurate. most of my other accessories i have wanted too or have already replaced, but my deathadder i havent even had the desire too. i love it soo much. when i build my new desktop i will be buying another one for it.
-
imo tho, the krait isnt worth the price, it has very limited functions and ton of mice are better alternatives. altho all time worst mouse by razer is def. the boomslang or salmosa, those are just horrid. the boomslang is so expensive as well, and has a very "different" shape. -
Deathadder!
-
y try look at steelseries mouse ... kinzu with $35 ... fugly and expensive , one programmable buttons ... even more unjustified for the price -
for <40bucks, my recommendation goes to the fabolous and reliable MX518. WAY WAY better than the krait.
wanna talk about unjustified mice?? take a look at the boomslang razer limited edition, 100 bucks for a sub-spec mouse with UGLY ogre-like design, only good thing is a nice tin case, which still isnt better than that 110usd casing for the mamba (the mouse costing 20bucks lol). i guess putting colector's edition on a mice makes it an auto-win 100usd mouse lol.
steelseries ikari laser is a decent mouse tho, i tried it and liked the shape. the OLED on the bottom is unnessary and the price makes u wonder a bit. with the DA 3500DPI (lol Steelseries just loves their term CPI..) @ 49bucks on amazon, anyone looking for a good gaming mouse should jump on that deal. -

haha yep, we all rmbr the MX518 and how great it was back in the day. a truly revolutionary mouse.
if i mite say so, i also love A4Tech mice, specially their cheating "orange button" which is like those turbo mods for 360 controller lol. -
-
ummm, microsoft sidewinder x8. i declare THAT to be the best mouse ever made.
-

^^Hm, its doing pretty well in my poll
-
not the bset but it is good, mamba is the best
again, i reccomend trying the mice b4 u buy it. thats the only thing i can say. both x8 and orochi are good. -
If you liked the G5 then I highly recommend the G500. It's the same design as the MX518, G5, G7. But it's got the bigger 5300dpi sensor of the G9x and none of the design quirks.
-
hmm funny thing. i rmbr reading a few ppl on this forum who tried the G500 after owning the G5 and said they didnt like it. thats only by my memory tho, im too lazy too dig it up...
altho the G500 does look sexy! imo tho, my perfect wired gaming mice is the roccat kone, i love that mouse to death outta all wired ones. but mamba = wireless = win for me so i chose that. the kone has awesome lights, awesome design and good amount of buttons/customization. it was really hard to find tho, and @ 60usd for mamba vs 110USD for the kone (in china) it was kinda obvious which to chose. -

I miss my Eclipse. Fedex dropped the ball when they tried to deliver it for RMA.

$60 for Mamba? Where did you get that from?
-
I've been using a Razer Diamondback 3G for about a year or two now. I've never had any problems with it and find it to be suitable for any game out there. It has adjustable on-the-fly sensitivity too if you think the cursor moves too fast. Not too expensive either. Only $40 direct from Razer.
-
So does better dpi result in better mouse performance?
I am also looking for a new mouse for gaming on a travel laptop -
Basically, a mouse takes so many points of data for so much physical movement on a mouse pad, or other surface. Your standard office mouse is 800 DPI, meaning for every inch you move the mouse, the mouse sends to your computer 800 points of movement data. A 5,600 DPI mouse like the Razer Mamba sends 5,600 points of data in the same amount of movement.
Now, the difference may not be quite so visible to the naked eye, but in my experience, it does improve things in the long run, when you tweak your sensitivity settings. Keep in mind that with a higher DPI mouse, you will have to lower your mouse speed in Windows or in your game settings to compensate for all the extra data coming in.
Another important factor in a performance gaming mouse is polling rate, which ties in to response time/latency. A standard mouse has a 125Hz polling rate, which yields a response time of 8ms. Most high-performance gaming mice have 1,000Hz polling rates, which yield a response time of just 1ms. Once again, not something you'll notice with your naked eye, but every little bit helps.
Since you're looking for a mouse for traveling, I recommend the Razer Orochi. It can connect via Bluetooth or via USB cable depending on how much mobility or performance you want. It has a 4,000 DPI laser sensor and 1,000Hz polling when plugged in via USB, and 2,000 DPI and 125Hz polling when in Bluetooth mode. -
-
as i said, there is a mamba in the marketplace if you're keen on it. otherwise try land yourself a DA/sidewinder x8/orochi.
about DPI and polling...DPI is good as long as its 2000 or above. Anything below and u start to notice it being unprecise while moving. i keep my copperhead @ 2000 (derh, thats the highest) but i only keep my mamba @ 3200DPI because it is enough and higher becomes way to sensitive. i know you might say, decrease your sensitivity, but i dont do that. i just leave sensitivity stock and 3200dpi on it. 1-4ms is good and anything above that is just going to feel laggy when looking at response times in mice. that is the true quality that comes with gaming mice, almost all wired oens have 1ms (to convert, you just do 1000/x for Hz polling) while most wireless have 8ms-2ms and the mamba raining supreme with spot-on 1ms in wireless mode. even though it's @ 1ms, i recomend keeping it @ 2-4ms cuz honestly you cant see the difference and it takes more CPU power to run @ 1000Hz polling rather tahn 250 or 500Hz. -
+1 for the MX518
Logitech is the way to go for gaming mice. -
How bout the G9x? I have one and I love it. I suggest that you try it out at a store first.

ahh, well its not like deals will never come back. but yea, that G13 + any mouse you choose is going to be a killer combo. i so want a G13 (v2, i read about some minor gripes with the pad), when it comes out.
get the x8 if a deal comes up, ive heard nothing but positive reviews. good mouse if the mamba isnt a choice. -
Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
Lol, good to see someone else is gonna rock that combo.
The reason i like it is because the convenience of having the moving part close to you body. The thing with the notebook keyboard you gotta lean over and use WASD, but with the G13 you keep it near you. Also i should have mentioned that the G500 is also another one im highly looking at. That thing looks sweet. -
I roll with the N52TE + Razer DeathAdder, personally. The N52TE doesn't have as many keys as the G13, but I find it more comfortable, and I don't really find myself needing more keys.
-
Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
^^^Yeah, i figured i said the same thing to myself the N52TE has the perfect amount of keys. I have a strong feeling(just a hunch) that the N52TE is due for refresh. I think that came out since 2007.
In terms of kills how much more are you seeing now as opposed to before with the stock keyboard? -
I haven't really been comparing stats, but I feel like I've been doing better. The N52TE is called a "speedpad" for a reason.
Of course, it could very easily be a placebo effect, but at the very least, it's significantly more comfortable than a standard laptop keyboard, and even my desktop's Logitech G15 keyboard.
As for a refresh, I dunno. Neither Belkin nor Razer have announced anything. I'm just going to assume that they won't. Maybe a driver or firmware update, but not a full product refresh, I think. -
microsoft sidewinder x8 how many times do i have to say this???
-
Infinite!!
Cause All Your Base are belong to Logitech!!!! -
