My current monitor seems to be dying, so I need a new one. Budget is effectively unlimited, but I'd need a very good reason to convince me to spend more than $500. I'm open to everything, so long as it's:

    1) High enough resolution to comfortably use Aero Snap - undecided whether I want 1680x1050 or 1920x1200
    2) No bigger than 24" for 1920x1200 or 21" for 1680x1050
    3) A decent or better *VA or preferably IPS panel. I've seen way too many IPS panels that have uneven lighting, horrible contrast ratios, color tints on part of the screen, etc. And PVA, of course, has the input lag issue.

[Edit] Oh, and I'm not sure if all of my GPUs support DVI dual-link, so that may be an issue as well.

you can tell if it supports Dual Link. Just look at the connector.

I'd get the Dell UltraSharp. Mad hot.

It's near the top of my list, but I'm seeking out all available options before I make a decision :)

    Well...

Seems like a pretty typical budget monitor. I'm not expecting to find a professional-grade monitor like the NEC LCD2490WUXi for $500, but I'm hoping I can get something at least as good as the MVA monitor being replaced.

Ooo, a newish Dell monitor that I didn't know about. Thanks. I guess this means I can cross the 2408WFP off the list.

$550 is fine. The real limit is $1000 - I simply said $500 so people wouldn't immediately start suggesting over-the-top professional-grade monitors.

Upon further reading, it seems this panel has some major flaws with regards to... what else but color tints on the screen. As always.

Leaning towards getting a 2209WA. It ain't perfect either, but it's only half the price.

I just got the dell 2209wa the 13th. It is absolutely thee best monitor I have had. Dont hesitate on buying it at all. The IPS panel is great the viewing angles are perfect. I do do a lot of side viewing cause I watch movies in the bed.

Just get it. If you need more convincing on it search hard forums for the 2209WA there is a super long thread on it.

    Damn, that's a pity. If the real limit is $1000 I think you could go for a 30" 2560 x 1600...

    There's 2 reasons why I don't want a 30":

    1) Ergonomics - I'd get neck strains pretty quick from having to always look up to see the top of the screen
    2) Lack of desk space - my desktop tower, 2 monitors, speakers, laptop, phone, printer, keyboard, mouse, and whatever paper documents I happen to be working with at the moment all have to share...

Even a 24" is kinda pushing it, especially for #2. I'll probably end up pushing my desktop to the floor in order to accomodate a 24", there's no way a 30" would fit.

All I can say at the end of this ordeal is:

It was very sleazy of Dell to sneak in the government-mandated environmental fee only after I had submitted the order (the totals on the order confirmation page and the emailed invoice are different). *Sigh* I guess this means I'll have to find the time tomorrow to call them...

LOL this seems like a bad time to make recommendations here since you already bought it... but why did we only stick with dell?? I have had dozens of Samsung's and they have all been great... no dark/light spots, or any kind of color tints...

The U2410 is a good deal, but the 2209WA is easily the best monitor I have ever used. Got two of them, one of these days I'll get a third.

Probably because Dell has by far the largest selection of high-quality midrange LCD panels. HP has a handful as well, but besides Dell and HP, everyone else (Samsung included) seems to only offer mass-market TN panels and super-expensive professional grade panels. Heck, the 2209WA I'm getting doesn't even have any competition that I know of - all other monitors at that price point pale in comparison in quality, and all other monitors with similar quality are $500+.

Is there a specific Samsung monitor that you would recommend? I'd cancel my order immediately if there was a Samsung (or any other monitor) that could beat the 2209WA's quality to price ratio.

Dell has the best prices for midrange monitors. That's just how it is.
