Well, my MX Revolution developed a battery defect after a year, and can't be used anymore. I can't get it replaced yet, because I bought it in Singapore, and I'm currently living in Adelaide. So I can only replace it (if they let me, since I only have the warranty card, no receipt) at the end of the year. I emailed the shop, so let's see if I can get it replaced..![]()
Anyhoo.. I need a mouse. I don't like the touchpad, and the UltraNav hurts my finger after a while.
If I can get my MX replaced, I'll just need something cheap, but durable, to tide me over, and maybe can be used in the future as a backup mouse.
If not, then I'll want something proper again. I absolutely love the ergonomics of the MX, so I don't think I can go back to a generic mouse anymore.
I've also thought about getting a wired one. Wireless is cool and all, but the recharging is somewhat... "rhythm-breaking". I won't mind a wireless one, but I think a wired one will be less of a hassle.
I don't game on my laptop, so I don't need a 50billion DPI frag monster demon, but I'm not going to turn away a mouse just because it's meant for gaming.
So, recommendations? (I'm right-handed)

mx518!
I know it's a gaming mouse, but it's excellent for everyday use as well. a button for switching between windows, and 2 navigation buttons at the thumb area.
great functionality and build quality, not so expensive. -
The Deathadder would be another option, its abit lighter than the MX518 so it might be better for portability. The cable doesn't tangle. The downside is that it isn't as well build. But to be honest, try them out in person, as their fitting are quite different.
-
For the cable tangling issue, I've decided a rubber band will be a simple solution to collect the excess wires
-
If your lappy has bluetooth go for the Logitech v470 bluetooth mouse. Great tracking, great fit, just switch it on and it connects like that. Has a tilt wheel also but that requires the included setpoint software which is a bit dodgey sometimes.
-
Isn't bluetooth really battery draining? I can't really recall if I have bluetooth. How do I enable it in Ubuntu Hardy?
-
If you're going the temporary replacement route I would definitely recommend the MX400. I love mine and it has the same design as the Revolution without all the sophisticated technology.
-
Hey! That MX400 looks just like the MX Revolution. I'll consider it, thanks
-
-
Aye.. It would. Then again, I don't really need a gaming mouse. Just a decent mouse will do fine. I'll have a look at that guide, though.

I use the G7 and love it for my laptop, at home on the desktop its the MX518.
I game so I use the gaming mice and find the buttons good for windows use too for say going forward/back in web browsing or changing the dpi on the fly. So I could not use a standard mouse with just the 2 buttons.
If I needed a really portable mouse tho to go in a small bag with a small notebook for business type stuff I think the Logitech Nano would be where I go first. -
Ooohh.. Timely update. The shop informed me that I can get a replacement, but I can only get one after I go back to Singapore. And that's probably in December or January of next year. I guess I'll have to get a replacement either way.
The problem I find with the VX and the Nano (even smaller) is that they're all quite small. I wouldn't say I have big hands, but I prefer the size of the MX Rev. It feels more... secure. The G7 looks ok.. But it's too similar to the MX Rev. And it's rather more expensive than the MX518 or the DeathAdder.
I think I'm leaning to the MX518, though, because it doesn't seem as, personally, I think, "vulgar" as the DeathAdder. Also, the MX518 seems to be cheaper as well.
Then again, I'll check the local stores. I'll just get whichever's cheaper. But I'm still open to suggestions... if there are more. -
I saw the G5 and the Razor Lachesis in a shop today. Do any of you recommend either of these?
Reading the reviews, they say the G5 is the successor of the MX518. Did the Lachesis come after the DeathAdder? -
The deathadder and the lachesis are both designed for different grip styles.
-
So which is more casual/relaxed?
-
Well, that will be your own opinion!
Which one did you find more comfortable? G5 or the Lanchesis? If you find teh G5 more comfortable, the chances are you will prefer the Deathadder.
-
Hmm.. I couldn't grasp them, they were still in the box.
Between the G5 and the Deathadder, which is more comfortable during non-gaming circumstances? Or which has the best non-gaming functionality? -
The G5 has a very nice thumb area, where as the deathadder's extra large side button are very nice. The G5's mouse buttons are also stiffer.

I use G7, it comes with two rechargeable Lithium Ion batteries, and the mouse has indicator on top of it to tell you how much of the battery is left. The wireless works a very long range, greater than 20 feet. It is also very comfortable and extremely sensitive. And the Sensitivity can be changed on the mouse. No driver is needed if you don't plan to program the mouse buttons.
-
Hmm.. G7. Except for the wire, is there much difference comfort-wise compared to the G5?
-
They are the exact same shape.
-
Hmm... There's an online offer for the MX518 for $40 (including shipping) is this a good price?
-
Not bad, have another look around, if you cant find a better deal or a similar deal on another mouse, then go for it.
-
Maybe I should try ebay instead. I think the MX518 will do fine. It's the cheapest and quite decent. Just to tide me over.
Need a new mouse (Touchpad is death)
