Saw a great one (at the link below) that would fit the bill but unfortunately it's been discontinued :(

I sometimes travel to a bad area of town. When there I'm prone to walking around the area unaccompanied by a pit bill or bodyguard.

I'd like a nondescript case that doesn't look anything like it might contain a laptop.

    I have a 17" HP.

Great idea that's no longer available, darn it:

I took a look - and it's interesting in an odd sort of way.

It's a very interesting reference made even a lot more interesting, and a little odd, when you consider the fact that that particular sleeve (seen in the link you posted) appears to have been discontinued by the manufacturer.

I noticed the merchant, PerpetualKid does not provide the consumer with a phone number - which, while not a deal-breaker - usually compels me to hit the back button on my web browser to go shop somewhere else.

I am lucky to have a great credit card company whose Dispute Department is exceptionally good at resolving negative complaints that involve a bad merchant.

But...I see where the seller, PerpetualKid, notes that the sleeve measures 12 inches wide x 16.5 long. They go on to say that the sleeve:

"Features an adjustable fixing system which ensure laptops of almost any size are held snugly inside."

It would appear to me that a sleeve that measures 12" wide by 16.5" will not accommodate a laptop that has a 17" monitor.

And who knows just exactly what an "adjustable fixing system" is...it might be a good feature that saves the day then again it might be worthless.

    Thank you for posting, edwardadmin13.

Any kind of sleeve and a regular backpack or shoulder bag. Get it from a sports store (some sporty logo on side), nobody wants to steal a bag full of dirty sports clothes ;)

That's the kind of bag that I'm trying to stay away from. A bad guy a block away would spot a bag like that and immediately deduce that it has a laptop in it.

It would be like carrying a bulls-eye on your back with a bumper sticker on your head that says LOOK AT ME! I'M CARRYING A LAPTOP FOR YOU TO STEAL!

That kind of bag would be great to have in an area that is considered safe - so I'm sure it's good for some people.

But if you're in a neighborhood that is known to have a few bad guys,

IMO that kind of bag could turn into a magnet that attracts the kind of eyes that are up to no good.

    Thank you for sharing.

I don't know what you mean by "any kind of sleeve."

What exactly is a sleeve and how many different types of sleeves in the world are there?

And where would you find them; at Home Depot, at a fabric store, or somewhere else?

I know that some sleeves are mechanical (and made out of metal) while others are related to homemaking and would be made out of fabric.

I dunno, it could also be a bulls-eye saying CCW.

OK, look at their backpacks then.

Usually neoprene with no or some kind of print. Prices range from few dollars to more than anybody would pay. It has no other meaning (in this case) than to protect your laptop inside the bag itself so a pink Hello Kitty print would work as well as a plain black one ;)

Edit: I originally meant: walk into the closest store that sells laptop accessories and take the cheapest one. They are virtually everywhere, at least those places where I frequent for my groceries sell some sleeves, among mice and keyboards and consoles... :p

Just a thought. Real bad guys will take your wallet first, then jewelry, then smart phone, then laptop. Not necessarily in that order.

Probably not - Hello Kitty sleeve will mean more often than not that they have a Barbiebook.

What you need is not stealth per say, but a pack that at distance will give the thief's something to think about. What you need is a military type of back pack, that looks like ordinary military issued back pack, but also caries laptops.

Hazard 4® California - Second Front

This is a back pack that i have and its great. I carry my laptop on the bus with me all the time, and not a single person has ever looked at me the wrong way. Yes, i am ex-military. But, even at airports TSA dont bother me when they see me with this pack, even though i can no longer use a military ID.

At the end of the day, its not the pack that matters, but how you carry your self, your body language can and will keep that thief's away. And pay attention to your surroundings at all times with out giving out the vibe that you are a pansy.

I was actually looking for a locking laptop bag and came across these bags.

Pacsafe Anti-Theft Bags & Travel Security Products | products

A lot of the bags have a nylon laminate mesh in between the outside and inside fabrics to protect against bag slashes. The shoulder straps have steal cables running through them to protect against slashing as well. The shoulder strap can also be detached, wrapped around an object, and then locked. Plus all the zippers can be closed and attached to hooks that prevent easy opening of the zippers.

I was looking for bags for my MSI GE40 that I should be receiving this Friday, but I think I'm going to stick with my SOLO padded Aluminum briefcase for right now.
