Need an external battery to use my laptop longer

Hi guys,

Right now I'm using an Asus G74SX, I'm planning on replacing it with Razer Blade 14 or Gigabyte P35K. The problem is neither of the laptop I wanted to buy have the battery capacity I need. I'm going to use the external battery for my upcoming laptop, not my current which is G74SX.

I know its strange to make a thread about needing an external battery when I don't even own the laptop yet. The problem is if I ended up buying one of them and I'm going to use a forwarder to ship it here then its best to have it ship together to save some money.

I've read toms hardware's article, the one that compares 15 different external batteries. The problem is the article probably outdated. The article was made in 2011. So I'm looking for an external battery that can power a Razer Blade 14 or a Gigabyte P35K or any gaming laptop for another 5-7 hours. I will not game during my time using the external battery, I just hope I can watch movies, taking notes, streaming, programming (I'm going to uni studying computer), and doing other light stuff. I rarely game if I'm not connected to a decent electricity. So probably I will not game if I'm charging my laptop using an external battery. My budget is about $200, I can go more if its really worth to keep. I don't want something that too thick and looks like a brick. I can't do a DIY battery like probably most of the users here did. So buying is my only option.

Also if I'm using an external battery, will it affect my laptop somehow? Maybe its performance? Laptop battery life?

What are you going to be doing with your laptop where you need an external battery?

I used to buy laptops that offered removable batteries, so that I could buy a spare (extended) battery for use when I needed it. In the past 6 years of doing this, I have maybe used those spare batteries twice. It's an absolute waste of money, plus it adds an additional 1.0 - 1.5lbs of carry weight to your laptop gear. You are honestly just better off buying a laptop that has the battery life you need, rather than trying to kludge together some solution with an external battery.

 

Ok, probably I think too far, probably I just need to wait for Gigabyte P35K to launch and see which has better battery life (Blade or P35K). There's a user in this forum that tested the Blade and it said that the Blade can stay on for about 3-4 hours if it was used to watch some movies. Probably I can get 5 hours with minimum brightness and just use it to take notes.

I don't know the circumstances under which you plan to watch movies away from a power outlet. But the way to go with movies is to get a tablet.

I fly around for work quite a bit. I don't even take my laptop onto the airplane cabin anymore to watch movies in flight. A Google nexus 7 tablet costs $200 (about your budget for an external battery). It lasts 10 hours for watch in movies, and let's you drag and drop files onto the file system such as *ahem* completely legal backups of BluRay movies in MKV format.
