Sandisk Sansa e240, e260, or e280. (They are the same player, just w/different sizes) Ive had one for about 4 months and i love it. Looks good, works good, earbuds w/it sound good, durable metal back. Check it out.

Umm... what are your criteria? How much storage do you need? What features?
-
It has to be said, the iPod's are pretty good players. They might not be the cheapest, but I have found both of mine to be worth the little extra for the easy to use package they are.
-
The sound exactly the same to be but in terms price per performance I think iRiver is better.
First I river has a custom equalizer unlike iPod nano which has all these default pre set.
Second, iRiver comes with a built in radio. You need to pay extra for the radio adapter for iPod nano.
Third, iRiver comes with a recorder.
Forth, iRiver plays almost every format you throw at it. Apple makes you convert to their stupid format.
I've had the first generation iPod nano about 2 years and the second I touch the iRiver clix it felt like what the iPod nano should be. -
here's another vote for iRiver!
Been using iRiver products for years now - have never been disappointed with their products. Very hardy and awesome quality/functionality. I would recommend wholeheartedly. I currently own the iRiver Clix and loving it! -

You can always convert the lossless format to pretty high bit rate .mp3.
Then again 320Kbps mp3 sound just fine to me. -

It really depends on what you're planning to use your MP3 for. If you don't need a radio or a recorder (which, personally I don't need or want in an MP3), than an iPod is a good choice.
I personally have an iPod mini, first generation. It still works flawlessly, and it's extremely durable. I have no problems with it whatsoever, and it works as great as it did when I first purchased it.
Also, to Ch28Kid, Apple's "stupid format" is called ".mp3". I don't think calling it a 'stupid format' is necessary considering you just posted how you do need to play .mp3's with the iRiver sometimes... -
Well the biggest problem I have is apple can't read .asf.
I download lots of chinese podcast and they are all .asf. I always have to spend 40 mins or just to convert them to mp3.
I do like the fact that I can watch video podcast flawlessly since almost all the podcast I watch have small h264. -
im thinking of going with the zune because of the price screen size and with an 80G it seems pretty good

The new Zen is a pretty nice player, just make sure that you know the SD function isn't integrated with the internal memory, so in my case it makes it pretty much useless(I own a 4gb).
iRiver does really good with their players, and the ones that they unveiled at CES looked pretty promising.
I personally like Cowon players the best, I own the U2, U3, X5, A2, And A3. I've been very pleased with all of them. They play any codecs that I need them to, they'll also do OGG and FLAC.
I'd avoid anything from Sansa except the Cilp, strictly for sound quality reasons though. -
If you wanna wait there a rumors of a new super awesome Creative player. Don't know how long, but it sounds like it is definetly coming.
