Hi everyone, long time lurker, first time poster here!
I'm basically here for help making a makeshift notebook cooling pad with some material I am lucky enough to already have around.
I have already applied Thermal Grizzly Cryo and have completed the Foil Tape Mod around the fan and exhaust fins, which has yielded in extremely good temperature drops, I just want to finish this little cooling project![]()
Material I have:
-Old CM Notepal (just frame, no fans or electronics)
-1 x 12V Noctua NF-A14 PWM (800-3000RPM)
-Photo and description of layout of underside of notebook (Lenovo E530)
I want to basically install the fan on the underside of the Notepal frame, directly under the fan intake area, as per the photo of the notebook underside.
So this is my question:
How can I hook the fan up to electricity to:
1. Be able to turn it on and off, and;
2. Change the speed.
I think I need some sort of 12V fan controller and a way to hook this up to electricity? Okay .. I really have no idea.
Any help is really appreciated as I'm not well versed in this area.
Regards,
PT

I've done something similar. You'll need a 12V DC power supply and the optional speed controller. If you don't want to do any soldering you can get this power supply and separate fan controller. I think that Noctua fan comes with a Molex adapter so you will not need to cut or solder any wires.

Thank Kosti,
Thanks for that. I'll check this out, looks good.
I just noticed that the fan is a 4pin PWM. Can I just get a 4pin PWM to Molex adapter? Is that even a thing? I'm unsure.

Yeah you will want an adapter unless you are willing to cut, splice, or solder wires. I thought that Noctua fan aleady comes with a molex adapter, but if you need to buy one, just get something like this:

All you actually need is two pins to be connected. The yellow (+12V) and the black (Ground). The other wires are not needed when using a manual speed controller. -
Ah ok, I see. Didn't know that about the pins.
Okay great, thanks for that. Appreciate it.
