Well here's the 1000th help me find a mouse thread

I'm trying to find a mouse with the following requirements(in no specific order) and would greatly appreciate any help..

    1. Must be large, currently using the Asus gaming mouse which came with the G73, if any of you know how large that is, it should preferably be a bit larger but definitely not smaller than that..

    2. Durable mouse feet.. Need something with really durable mouse feet because i noticed that after i started using my vespula mouse mat (hard plastic), there was significant wear of the mouse feet within a month and the movement became less slick

    3. Pinky rest would be highly preferable, the way i hold the mouse makes me keep having to shift my little finger up to avoid touching the mat which gets annoying sometimes..

    4. Razer,Logitech,Roccat and CM would be preferred brands as they're easily available here in India. Steelseries available too but never really liked their products. Overall Razer most preferred because I like their soft-touch surfaces and if mouse feet dont end up being very durable, easy to get replacements...

    5. Very high DPI is not really a factor. I use my current mouse with a laser sensor @ 2000dpi with 1000hz polling, so anything above 3200dpi/1000hz this would be redundant for me..

    6. Corded/cordless doesnt matter.

    7. Price - around a max of about $70(retail price, not MSRP) coz that would retail for the equivalent price of about $100-$110 here in India.. :/

    Oh and i'm Right-handed..

PS: just need one which meets most of em..

    MX518 sounds good to me

I have been using one for like 5 years and so I know its durable.

Its the standard mouse size just like the one that came with the Asus

Its not very expensive especially when on sale

It does not have like some shelf to rest your pinky on but it does have an indentation to the side of the mouse that seems more than adequate to me to keep your fingers in place effort free.

I think that your hard pressed to find a mouse better than the MX518 in any way in that price range.

Keep in mind that if your ruining mouse feet quickly that for relitivly cheap you should be able to get stickers and other material that cover up the feet to make them glide easier and last longer. Also it could be your mousing surface causing the issue. It may have been your thread or maybe somebody else but they complained about the razer mousepad basically shredding there mouse feet to nothing very quickly.

^ thanks Vic, even i've been considering the MX518 but i'm a little concerned that the 1800 dpi might be too low, requiring wide sweeping movements which i wouldn't like..

Also, even though i said i dont really like steelseries, how's the Ikari(optical), I just saw a picture and i think the shape would be perfect for me.. so if anyone has any feedback about it, much appreciated..

Dont fall victim to the DPI game.

can you even imagine plotting 1800 dots in an inch of space? You cant humanly even make a movement that small to register only a singe dot of movement.

Higher DPI mice are always just counter balanced with lower sensitivity in game or in windows, so your not actually using the higher DPI value.

Whats much more important is the accuracy of the sensor, and its error correction algorithm. Things like this the MX518 has been known to excel in for many years beating much higher DPI mice head to head in actual real life performance testing instead of just a spec sheet.

Mice tech is not too far off from Scanners and Cameras. Its much easier to see what happens when you cram a Higher DPI (or MP) into a device that should not have it. You just get less quality.

Consumer level point & shoot cameras are extremly guilty of taking say a 5MP camera and re-releasing it exactly the same as before with 10MP and customers are fooled into thinking the 10MP version is better. In reality is worse as it has the same image sensor thus the same amount of accuracy is given to the image taken but now the picture is 2x the size and looks worse. As a result most people just end up shrinking the final image down in size to make it look better.

With a scanner if you took a higher DPI value the same thing would happen, larger image with less quality.

The only way to use higher DPI for a camera would be a larger/better sensor.

The only way to use higher DPI for a mouse would be to have a better sensor & suddenly become super human to where you make much smaller movements than normal and do it accurately.

In theory @ 1800DPI in a 1:1 pixel to DPI ratio you would span the entire width of a 1920x1080 screen in about 1 inch.

If your not moving that fast your starting to artificially limit the DPI via software sensitivity settings. I cant think of any pro gamer I know that works with a sensitivity setting even close to that fast.

At any rate, dont take my word for it you can read more here: http://www.esreality.com/?a=post&id=1265679 and many other places on the web. Its pretty old data now and mouse tech has advanced but its a good eye opener that there is a lot more to judging a mouse than the DPI. Also think of all the mouse models that have come and gone in the last 6 years.

The MX518 is still here! There must be a reason for that, and its because its good and proven beyond the limit of time.

Also considering your budget even without the knowledge I just stated you would be hard pressed to find any other known 'good' mice in that range. Most others with the higher dpi start near the $100 range.

Check out the Razer DeathAdder. It's another one of the greatest optical mice of all time along with the MX518, but it's a little more updated with a 3,500 DPI optical sensor, although unless you play with extremely high sensitivity, 1,800 would be enough anyway.

It's one of the larger mice according to most people, and quite comfortable. It's got 5 buttons and plenty of room for your fingers. MSRP is $60, but Amazon's standard price for it is $45.

Yeah DeathAdder is a good one, and also they cloned the MX518 and call it the Imperator.

Thanks for the input again.. Vicious what do you have to say about the g400 which is supposed to be the official successor to the mx518..? is it be any better..?

the only reservation i have with both the mx518 and the DA is that the design is such that i'll probably have to rest my little finger on the mat... :\

hmm well i guess i have big hands... and you know what they say about guys with big hands.....

They have trouble finding mice.. :p

Anyway, i'll definitely try it out once before buying but i'm pretty much firm about the DeathAdder if it fits fine.. Otherwise I might get the ikari, because I think it's design is very good for me..

thanks both of you for all your help..

Have not personally used the G400 cant give my personal opinion. I I have G7 that I love to death but its no longer made and almost got the G700 at some point just to test/review. But those both are more expensive wireless mice.

While I do agree with this in principle, let's be fair. Most digital cameras worth their salt will allow you to manually select the amount of MP you are using, which in turn affects the size of the photo.

For example, if you have an 8MP camera (like the Olympus FE-340) you can manually select the camera to take photos which will fit a certain portrait size, ie 8x10 or 4x6. Doing so reduces the number of MP used to "make" the digital photo, which both reduces the file size of the photo and can make the photo sharper (less grainy) at its native resolution.

In essence, while most camera manufacturers will try to convince consumers that more MP is better, (which clearly is not the case, unless deliberately shooting at insanely high resolutions) you more often than not have the ability to adjust the MP of the camera which avoids the unwanted introduction of noise and other artifacts in your photos.

To the OP, sorry for the small derailment; if it were me, I'd go with the G9x. The G9x offers a series of various grips that can aid in that perfect ergonomic grip. I personally use satin textured grip which offers a small pinkie platform.

The ikari is a great mouse that i find is more comfortable than the deathadder. Its functions and driver support are way better than Razers too.

Yea I already ordered ikari laser, got a pretty sweet deal for it too.. Ikari laser+ free extra pair of glides for the equivalent of $58, dunno how cheap that is by US standards, but that a pretty good deal here!
I've had a bad experience with steelseries in the past which put me off their products, let's hope this time is different..
Anyway thanks for your input romiyo..
