I just ordered a Compaq r3000t today with 15.4" wide screen, and was hoping to get a couple recommendations on a good bag that would also work for carrying school supplies (books, notebooks, etc). Doesn't matter if it's a shoulder or back pack, I'm open to any suggestions. Thanks for the help.

Targus is a really big name. You might want to check out what they have to offer. I believe there site is targus.com im guessing but probably is.

The Jansport Optimizer would be a good choice, along with the www.spireusa.com bags.

don't get the booq bag boa.xl
I ordered one for my dell 9100 and plan on returning it. the bag is smaller than I expected, and to be honest, is not nearly as great as its described here: http://www.booqbags.com/Detail.bok?no=60
The arm straps are not comfortable. They have about 2/8" padding in the middle of the strap (they straps dig into my shoulders). I'm 6' 195lbs and find that the bag feels like a monkey trying to kill me from behind.
My notebook is not secured in the computer section of the bag. There is no strap or fastener to secure it. The padding is not very thick or very dense. There isnt too much room for anything other than a notebook at 14.1"x10"x2" and the power supply. All be it, the 9100 is a big book, its not as big as you'd think.
bleh.

I'm getting my HP zx5000 series today (woo hoo! it's a case of love at first site) but i need a back pack that will protect my shiny new baby and carry all of my books (and there are a lot). And I am way too vain to carry a wheelie bag. can someone suggest a bag that can comfortably carry everything and not make me look like a high school freshman again? No offense to HS frosh.
Btw, i want one that looks really stylish. Thanks!! -
I'm getting a 15 inch HP and I need to find a good but COOL looking case for it. Can anyone help?
Thanks. -
I second the Optimizer by Jansport. I think it's the perfect bag for school. It'll comfortably hold a laptop, some books, and smaller items (PDA, CD player, etc.) The armstraps are very comfortable and the bag looks like any other book bag...as opposed to a laptop bag that says 'Steal me' all over it.

I got a life, but it's currently up for auction. -
I got one of these for my R3000z:

I can either carry it by the handle, sling it over my shoulder, or pull out the back straps and strap it to my back. [8D]

I looked all over for the right bag/backpack and I found this one at Best Buy:

Swiss Gear Synergy Computer Backpack
I think its the best of the backpacks that I was able to find
in major stores for several reasons.
Its well organized enough to fit what you would want in a good
order of the pockets. The zippers are well made and slide easily
which a lot of them are not. It's not top heavy like some
so that you can use it as a backpack to carry a few
things and it wont just fall over. Extemely well made and
durable overall. I liked it better than Targus. I couldnt
find anything I liked at REI either. I plan to use it as
both notebook case and overall backpack use.

I'll second the recommendation for the Ogio Metro. It's a very well designed backpack and fits a 15.4" widescreen. It has an incredible number of little pouches and places to stash stuff. However, it is better at carrying lots of little things then large books and notebooks. The main compartment is modestly sized when you have the computer in it. I believe you could fit a notebook and two textbooks in addition to the computer. I'm not sure if a third textbook would fit.

HP actually has a fairly nice notebook backpack made for the Pavilion and Presario notebooks. You may just want to pop onto the hpshopping.com website and give it a look.

I've been looking for a backpack for a very long time. My Acer is big compared with the other 15,4" laptops and every backpack was too small (Targus Matrix, Jansport Java, Samsonite). What is important for me, these backpacks don't have good enough protecion. Jansport Optimizer has laptop section with side access so it wouldn't fit too. Swiss fits but I don't like its design, and imho they don't protect as good as Jansport backpacks.
Finnaly I bought Jansport Pc Port ( http://www.jansport.com/productdetail.php?tid=4&cid=16&pid=TE17 ). It's great backpack which protects laptop from every side (top corners too). You can customize laptop section if your computer is smaller. Pcport is pretty heavy with these all protections-over 3lbs ...Optimizer- over 2lbs...Jansport Java- 2lbs, but it has Airlift 2.0, the best shoulder straps system (it's very light with laptop). Optimizer has it too.
If your laptop is smaller than mine I would choose between these two backpacks. They cost about 100$ everywhere, but I've found PCPort for 70$!! http://www.luggagebase.com/btc/product_display.aspx?l=00060045000000000000&p=JSX01295&k=00060045000000000000&pn=1
O, I forgot to add that PcPort has a lot of place for other stuff. I think that it could take even two laptops, so don't worry about the books.
