So I had these speaker / subwoofer set with my desktop and now I want to use them with my laptop.

The only problem is that they were powered by the desktop. Check out the images below to see what the cable looks like and where it plugged in.

Any ideas if I can get some sort of transformer / adapter to power these speakers?

Get new ones. They are probably crappy oem ones anyways.

Well if I can't get these to work, then I'll use an old dvd surround sound system that I have (if it's possible through aux...). And if I can't get that to work, I'll probably end up getting new speakers.

    But until then... any suggestions?

Nope - looks proprietary, what kind of desktop is it? In any event, unless you want to use the old desktop just to power the speakers, or you're a whiz and can create your own power supply and find the right adapter, looks like you're out of luck.

There are alway great deals out there for speakers. I bought a refurbished Logitech X-540 set for $40 CDN a while back. Aside from a few small scuffs, they are amazing, and a steal for the price. The bass can be heard down the block when cranked. Beware though you will need a set that will use either a 3.5mm jack adapter or SPDIF (which I think your notebook supports).

It's a VAIO desktop and the speaker model is VGP-SP1.
Dang. Well I guess I'll have to go with new speakers.
    Thanks for the answer!

cut that plug off and cut the end off one of those transformer charger things and then solder the transformer to the speaker. by thransformer I mean one of those black boxes that powers the cordless phone receivers. Just find one that matches the voltages and the amperage.

I had a set of vaio speakers like that too...they were terrible anyways i just threw them out when i built a new computer. Seeing that you can get a decent set of logitech 2.1's for 30 bucks that would kick these buts any day its worth it :)

If you really want to make them work then cut the jack at the end and connect it to an external 12v power adapter/supply like aussiek2000 said. You should be able to find a power adapter for less than $10.

What is speaker brand ? I also don't think its worth wasting your time or money on those.

As for new speakers, I suggest Klipsch Pro Media 2.1 Out of all the cheap 2.1 systems that I've tried I liked them the best.

I have the exact same speakers and I just got them working. I just found a random 12v DC adapter and soldered the end of the speaker cable to the new adapter. It happened to be 1.7A, but anything that is MORE amps, than the 1.2 required, will work. Just make sure that you get the polarity right (positive center).

They are on sale right now too http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=415700

Through $119 doesnt sound like a big discount.

The Pro Media Ultra's are the best :D :D

But I would never spend that much on "computer speakers" I would rather invest in a home theater amp and speakers because they are even higher quality and since they are not so specialized they are cheaper and more versatile.

I got my Klipsch Quintet III's for $150 and my Klipsch Synergy 10" sub for $100 on black friday like 3 or 4 years ago and they are way above the PC speakers in quality and wont rely on there own propriatary amp like PC speakers so if the amp goes I can get a new one, also I have radio, and all the inputs my home theater reciever gives me.

I think thats the way to go.
