I am wondering if I really need a sleeve if I am already buying a tough backpack for my laptop. What do you guys think of sleeves? Are they worth the $10-$30?

Sleeves aren't really for protection from drops or rough treatment - that's what a durable bag is for. Sleeves are to prevent scratching and other minor physical damage when the notebook is put in a backpack with other stuff. Depending on how well padded the laptop compartment of the back you're getting is, you will or will not need a sleeve.

Neoprene sleeves are always good for that *added extra protection*. If you have a well *padded* backpack or bag..you won't need one. But if you want that extra *wrap* for proctection, it would be a good investment! ;)

I have a Neoprene sleeve for both my XPS 1530 and my Mini 9 Netbook. I have a Synergy Swiss Gear Backpack for my 1530. I don't put the sleeve on my 1530 when packing the 1530 in my b.pack, as it's very well protected.

But, if I'm carrying it alone..or in a tote..I will use the sleeve to guard against any potential scratches, etc. Same, go's for my Netbook.

It comes down to personal choice, and what works for you. You can get sleeves these days for a nominal cost at sites such as: amazon.com, ebags.com, meritline.com (great deals there).

    Hope that helps!

    Cin ;) :)

I spent $40 on a Zeroshock 3 notebook sleeve for my laptop and I have no regrets. I can sleep soundly knowing that it won't get scratched while its in the sleeve. The sleeve has memory foam, which is an extra layer of comfort and I think it helps a lot in reducing shock and force damage.

If you really want to keep your computer in tip top condition, a good sleeve is a good investment. Think of it as a car cover for your exotic sports car.

ya the sleeves wont add much protection.. mainly for scratches etc etc.. they are also good if you are just going a short distance.. IE: local coffee shop... and don't really want to lug around that huge backpack!

Also some sleeves add some degree of rain protection, if the backpack is not 100% watertight.

Agree :) I used a sleeve on my SZ, then stopped - not the lid looks a touch more beaten up - i.e. scratched - so it really depends.

A sleeve will keep your laptops looks :)

Although it does give you bit of impact protection if its a thicker sleeve.

If your backpack/messenger bag has a built-in laptop sleeve I suppose you can use just that. But if not a sleeve is a good investment IMHO to prevent scratches etc. that may be cause by the other items sharing the bag with your laptop. I got the Incase Nylon sleeve plus 13" which I can use as a sleeve in a bigger bag or a stand-alone mini-messenger when I just need to carry my laptop + charger somewhere (has a detachable shoulder strap and carry handles.) You can find cheap sleeves at your local TJ Maxx/Marshalls (I see belkin sleeves for like $15) or perhaps Target/Walmart. Well worth the $15-$20 for the piece of mind IMHO.

What do you guys think of this sleeve: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t..._shr?_encoding=UTF8&m=A3V6BK4D0HKA8F&v=glance
Does it look nice? is it sturdy/protective? is it waterproof?

Thanks a lot for the help. ;)

Edit: Wait a second, does the backpack have a sleeve with it ( http://www.amazon.com/Targus-TXL617-17-Notebook-Backpack/dp/B0001EMM10/ref=pd_sim_misc_5)? Because it does say "separate, padded notebook compartment fits most notebooks with 17-inch screens" in the description. Anyone got a Targus TXL617 Notebook Backpack who can answer this life-threatening question for me?
