I've had a Dell monitor with that resolution for over a year now.

Heck I have an OLD samsung monitor that has to be pushing 4 years old with that res.

HDTV resolutiolutions are kind of a joke to those of us used to high res monitors. and HDTV dpi and pixel size ... well SUCKS

    my main monitors are 2560x1600@60Hz

Comparing TVs to monitors is pointless.

A TV is not designed to be viewed from anything like as close a distance as a monitor.

True but WAY too many people in these forums think that 1080 lines of vertical resolution is the greatest thing going. and I have to laugh at all the users specifically looking for 720 or 1080 laptop screens to match their " High Def " fix

Marketing is technically giving us crappier screens then we had 4 years ago with lower DPI and higher pixel sizes .. and no one seems to notice but programmers and SOME graphics designers

There's already one pointless thread on the whole 16:9 issue, can we please not get into here as well?

    QWXGA.

That Samsung has been out for about a year and a half now. Dell also has a 23" with that rez and Acer has a 23" and 27" using it.

It needs to make it's way down to 16" through 18.4" notebook where it would have a DPI similar to 1920x1200 on those screen sizes.

You didn't have video with 1080 vertical lines that long ago ;) HD video is what's known as a "killer app" that's getting people to upgrade from their 1024x768 monitors.

Computer monitor>TV unless you go for the really cheap bad ones.

Actually, most of the cheaper 720p TV's have exactly the same resolution as most of the notebooks sold nowdays @ 1366x768. I know the plasmas either have that resolution, 1024x768, or are true 1080p.

Computer monitors and TVs are intended for different purposes so comments such as "Computer monitor>TV" are meaningless.

Yes, my Dell SP2309W is better suited for sitting in front of at a desk than my Samsung LE40A656 but when it comes to watching a movie whilst lying on the sofa on the far side of the room, the Samsung wins every time.
    Horses for courses.

Then where would we get into it? Certainly not on a gardening website.

A discussion on screen resolution is perfectly appropriate here--as is aspect ratio. They are both directly related to modern computers.
Again insufficient. In fact the line between the two continues to become more blurred with every update; and there is a ever increasing degree of overlap.

In fact, I'd go as far as to say that at the upper levels, the two are virtually interchangeable for all but the most discriminating professionals who demand exacting standard--such as broadcast professionals and video and still photographers.
With a few exceptions, all tvs are monitors. And have been so for a very long time.

    Did I say that?
There is a thread dedicated specifically to 'discussing' the merits of various aspect ratios, so there is no need for this thread to turn into such a debate.

Obviously aspect ratios are very closely related to monitors, TVs, resolutions etc but that doesn't mean that every thread on any of those subjects should be dragged back down into the whole 16:9 vs 16:10 argument.

So where are the 40" 1920x1080 monitors or the TVs with 2560x1600 resolutions?

They don't exist because they would not be suitable for such uses, because the two product categories, despite whatever technical similarities may exist, they are designed with different uses in mind and are, therefore, not interchangeable as you argue.

Of course some TVs and monitors will bear a closer similarity than some others but your generalisation is incorrect - especially at the higher end of the market.
