After about six years of service, my LL Bean Dexule is starting to tear apart. I discovered a large hole in the floor of the main compartment, so I definitely need to replace this thing unless I'd like to drop my laptop on hard concrete(!).
Right now, I'm looking back at LL Bean to see what they have, but I'm by far not a backpack expert, so I don't know much else out there. In addition to that, I have no idea what would be a reliable backpack outside of the LL Bean that I've used. I've had luck with Eastsport in the past, but I haven't used any other brands.
Any suggestions for a backpack that's <= $75? I don't need anything too fancy (doesn't even need a laptop sleeve), but I need it to be as durable as I can afford in that range. Right now, for reference, I'm checking out another Deluxe (~$35) and the Super Delux (~$55). Ideally, I'd like to have a backpack that's waterproof as well (or at least will keep the insides dry in heavy rain).

BuyDig.com - Toshiba Extreme Backpack for Notebooks up to 18" (PA1500U-1BS8) - Black/Blue
$25 with this promo code EM1ST5K
This is an amazing backpack ... much like the swissgear backpack. High quality ... THICK ... sturdy. Just overall well built with a lot of compartments and size! -
Targus
I've bought my Targus backpack 8 years ago and no deformities or cloth breaking anywhere on it - still using it on daily basis. Backpack even rolled down 2 flights of stairs with notebook inside - due to special cushioned compartment for notebook there was no harm done. -
Hmm, the Toshiba bag is out of stock and the Targus bag is something I might consider, though it doesn't seem "truly" waterproof (you need to roll out a cover for when it rains?).
Someone suggested me a Chrome Delta Flap Pack, and I've also spotted the Hurley Streamline. What other suggests do you guys have, NBR?
This looks good as well(?): http://store.apple.com/us/product/HB233VC/A/timbuk2-15-slide-backpack-for-macbook-pro-and-ipad -
I've been caught in the rain few times with my bag and notebook wasnt wet. You need to know that although they mark "material" as waterproof -> zippers arent waterproof. I you stay soaking the rain too long water will come trough zipper and you are in a world of pain regardless of how the bag is branded and marked. Its pretty irrelevant which manufacturer you chose as long as they have fully cushioned compartment for your notebook inside the backpack. Meaning if backpack falls for any reason or subway doors kick it notebook will be protected inside.
Bag you linked dosent look promising. Altho notebook has its own compartment - 0 protection in there from drops/shocks its like a nylon covered compartment not cushion. -
This is the backpack I am going to get for school, Targus Drifter II Backpack Designed for 17-Inch Laptop. I have not got it yet but the reviews are good. It is on amazon or 55.

I have my eyes set primarily on this right now: Hurley Streamline Backpack - eBags.com. Also have my sites set on this ( Chrome District Backpack | Chrome Industries) and this ( Chrome Delta Backpack | Chrome Industries), and it would be nice if anyone who owned Chrome bags commented on how durable and weather-proof they are.
New backpack suggestions?
