You can just about get the super.fi3 for $70 on ebay (brand new). The ER6i would be even better but you probably wont get used to the amount of bass (or the lack of) from both of them. But they do provide far clearer sound.

The metro.fi2 are nice, pick up some with the older packaging for $40 on ebay.

The CX500's are like the CX300's only more refined. They basically took the CX300's and fixed some of its short comings with the 500's.

Well the V Moda bass freqs have artificially attenuated bass, so if you like those, anything else probably isn't going to be "bassy" enough for you.

The ER6i will probably have the least bass of all of them since it's the most sonically accurate of the bunch. Shure E2c has wicked muddy bass, it's there but it sounds terrible. Don't love the Sennheisers, personally. They're OK but there's better out there.

I have the ultimate ears super.fi 3 and I love them.

Might also want to check out the skullcandy Full Metal Jacket. The styling is similar to the VModa and they have a pretty good kick to them, and the cables are aluminum braided so probably pretty tough to destroy.

Ah, I had UM2s and they just refused to stay in my ears. Sounded good though.

I use the Studio 3s day to day and recently bought the new triple.fi as an indulgence. I haven't messed around with them much but MAN do they do vinyl some serious justice.

The ER-6i's are probably the last thing you want to pick if you are a basshead. They are great for picking up on new things in music though. The clarity is astonishing.

Sorry about hijacking this topic but I don't want to create a new thread to ask this same question? :p

What are the best in-ear noise-canceling comfortable earbuds I can find for under $50?
Bass is not an issue, but I must have superb sound quality and durability.

    Thanks

you can't get any good sounding noise cancelling earbuds only noise isolating earbuds.

Forget my addiction to bass, i just need more bass then apple earbuds, do the er6i do the job?which earbuds will be good for listening to rock or heavy metal? Any good portable headphones recommended? So how are the metro fi.2s compared to bass freqs?

ER6i are heavily accurate headphones so you probably won't like them if you like the bass to stand out.

Anything is going to sound better than apple earbuds. The apple earbuds are terrible.

Haven't tried the Vmodas as I tried a pair of the vibes and HATED them, so I can't compare the two. I tend to like ultimate ears as a rule.

You can get decent sounding earbuds with active noise cancelling.

If you want headphones specifically tweaked for rock music, then you'd want the 4 series from ultimate ears (out of your price range) or the Skullcandy. If you want balanced earphones you'd get studio 3s or the etymotic. If you want better mids but crappier bass you'd buy the shures.

You won't get superb sound quality for $50. Average to mediocre, maybe.

Also, active noise cancelling typically starts at $70 and up, in your range, you'd be looking at noise isolating earphones. I'd recommend sony MDR EX 55 or skullcandy titans (which have the new Comply tips) in that price range for passive noise isolation.

Sound Quality & Cheap dont go hand in hand.

the minimum u gotta spend is around $100 on just headphones to experience quality.

First of all, I have to say I very strongly disagree with those who say that you can't get great sound quality on a budget. I have a pair of Sennheiser PX-100's and Yuin PK3's and they make any standard headphones sound like absolute trash. My sister is always using them because she hates her regular buds now that shes gotten used to the sound quality on these. You know how much I paid for them? About $40 each. There are some really great values on headphones out there.

To both posters I highly recommend the Denon C551's. Buy.com has an amazing deal on them right now, just $56 and free shipping! The MSRP for these is $100. I've done some research and they have gotten really positive reviews. And they're usually compared to other earphones in the $80-100 range so that makes this an even better deal.

Honestly, the Denons should blow your bass freqs out of the water. I don't think that V-moda has ever been known for great sound quality and the bass freqs are one of their cheaper models too.

Good luck anyway, because I've learned that good headphones can really make your music come alive.

Umm.. I don't think you can really compare anything to apple stock buds, except like skull candies. The ER(Eyemotic Research) headphones are pretty nice, if your not a bass head. They have a little, but not much. Certainly not enough for me. I feel more at home with some Sennheiser CX300's. Or if you want more expensive ones that will isolate more then go with the Ultrasonic Atrio M5's.

Any decent headphone will be better than the apple stock ones. Most earphones are built for clarity of sound reproduction with little to moderate bass. Your best bet is to get a DJ headphone like the technics or Pioneer with lots of bass and average highs and mids.

I got a pair of Sony MDR-NC 22s for a song on Ebay a while back. I haven't had the time to try them out though. They seem to get OK ratings, and for the price, they're a good deal.

As others have said, if you want "superb," you gotta pay.

So is the clarity between the er6i and super.fi 3 a big difference? Because im leaning toward ultimate ears because they feature a replaceable wire.

^ not helpful because those aren't what he's looking for and that's a spam post.

The ER6 will be clearer but because it's a more sonically ACCURATE earphone there will be less bass. If you want a bassier headphone the super.fi 3 is better for that.

and yes, having the replaceable cables has been great.

nothing except they look really bizarre. the driver is curved so that it wraps against your head, so if you wear it pulled straight down they kinda stick out and look weird.they're not very comfortable that way, all IEMs are designed to be worn with the cable going over the ear.

Yes the replaceable cable is great. :) But then again $20 for a cable isn't exactly cheap. But they did serve me well on long plane/bus/train journeys over the last year.

*waits for the UM1 to arrive*

Umm. no not all of them are designed that way. Some are, some aren't just depends on the design. Some that aren't designed that way but they work better if you wrap them around, others not.

When I was using ATH-CK7 with stock tips, I had to wrap them around my ears. Now I am using UE double flange tips, I found it better to not wrap them around my ears (I like it more this way). So, yeah, its complicated. :)

The only ones I know of that are expressly designed NOT to be worn that way are the Etymotic line. The shure, ultimate ears studio line, westone, are all designed that way and almost all can be worn that way without a change in fit, but wearing the shures, UE, or westone with the cable straight down screws up the position of the driver housing relative to your ear.
