    Hello,
I need help finding a pair of reasonably priced (under $100) pair of noise canceling headphones. I'll mainly use them during commuting trips and on board airplanes so, portability is a plus. I don't have any brand preferences, but have heard that ear-cup headphones are more comfortable and provide better sound quality. Any recommendations?

    Targus Active Noise Cancellation Headphones...$49.99.

I use them myself, and find them to work well for airplanes. But they do need to be turned on to really work well and give decent sound (they provide limited passive ability).

You might be interested in the Sennheiser CX300 in-ear 'phones. Even though they are not noise cancelling, they do an excellent job of blocking unwanted exterior noise. Their sound quality is phenomenal. They cost less than $50.

Being in-ear 'phones, they are suitable for in-flight use.

You can consider the Shure E2's. They're in-ear buds, and as far as passive noice cancellation goes they're better than any earcup. Being in-ears they're pretty portable. Supposedly they cancel noise so well that it can even be considered a safety hazard to be walking around on the street with both of them on, so I'm not sure if they'd be fit for use on your commutes..

    Sound quality is also great.

My vote is the Shure E2C's, I love the in ear design (although some people can't wear these, so it's preference) and find they reduce outside noise to pretty much nothing.

Personally I find the over ear ones uncomfortable after about 30 minutes of wear, but that's just my preference.
