Are there some good noise filtering earphones? (for when it gets too loud to study)

If you're looking at headphones, any closed headphone will be pretty good at blocking outside sound. Otherwise, many IEMs (inner ear monitors) will also be a good choice as they fit down into the ear canal and block sound out.

On the IEM front, I personally have some q-Jays and they do a good job at blocking sound out. They obviously do even better as soon as you turn some music on also.

Maybe... in-ear earphones like the Sennheiser CX-300?

IEM's work really well, or if you want something bigger that you don't have to stick into your ear canals then maybe some closed can headphones? Which models to suggest depend on how much your willing to spend, and what kind of sound signatures you like.

I'd prefer earphones over headphones. What are IEM's? I'd like for them to be as cheap as possible - I don't need to have every single sound blocked out but preferably as much as possible. I saw a couple pairs for around $20-25 at Walmart, will they work?

Earphones are mainly open so they dont block noise much.

In-ear Monitors are better at blocking noise.

    Checkout CX300 by Sennheiser

If you want cheap as possible.

Try getting Creative EP-630, they're essentially OEM versions of the Sennheiser CX-300.

I have them and they're pretty good for their price. I got them for $31 AUD. It should be cheaper in the US.

I was also looking at the V-Moda Bass Freq Earbuds, Phillips SHE9500, JBuds Hi-Fi Noise Reducing Earbuds, Sony EX51LP and Sony EX71S. How do these compare to the Sennheiser CS-300? I'm looking to spend around $20 and no more than $30.

IEM's are In Ear Monitors, which will isolate(filter) the noise best. They are the kind of ear phones that you stick into your ears like an earplug, you actually put them inside your ear canal instead of just setting them in your ear like a regular ear bud.
