I want a bookbag to carry my laptop in, and I want a stylish, mainstream brand like North Face. Does the Recon or Recon2 have enough padding to properly secure and keep a laptop safe?

If your laptop is a 15.4" widescreen notebook it won't fit in the recon 2, and I don't think it'll fit in the recon, but I'm not sure about that. If your laptop is smaller, there is plenty of padding in the recon 2 for a notebook, I would have bought one if my s96j had fit.

The HGL30 is a 14.1", so it should be fine, right?

I have it and it does not have what I believe is sufficient padding. For example if you were to take the backpack off and it place it on the floor, do so very carefully. It does have a "sleeve" that prevents the laptop from moving around. My 14" ThinkPad fitted in there quite well. Outside of that I rarely use it for transporting laptops.

My S96j fits, just not in the laptop compartment. For padding I used one of my t-shirts and stuffed it on the bottom.

Are there any other suggestions that I can add padding to the laptop compartment besides.. a t-shirt?

Just a light notebook sleeve maybe.

I bought the Recon II for school. I have yet to use it, but it looks pretty good. The laptop compartment has a little bit of padding (I was expecting it to have none at all from what I've heard). I bought an HGL30 that should be arriving tomorrow, so I'll see how it fits, but I think I should be able to put a thin sleeve around it and then fit it snugly in the backpack.

I sometimes borrow my significant other's iBook and she has the Incase neoprane sleeve which provides superb protection. I plan on buying something similar for my new HP.

If you want the best quality sleeves, get the Tom Bihn sleeves. They cost about 50bucks a sleeve and have a wide array of colors. They have two different sleeves. One where you slide the notebook verticaly, ideal for backpacks, and a sleeve that is horizontal, ideal for messanger bags. But they are pretty thick and may not fit your recon bag.

sumdex impactguard sleeve for around $20. it has memory foam, very well built, and has handles so you can use it as a simple case when you don't want to take a bag. Since the bag already has padding and you're limited on space (the tom bihn sleeves are big because they suspend the laptop) a sleeve like this or the shinza zeroshock which is identical but more expensive would be good. there's a review of it here
