Question #1: I heard the max temps of the CPU are about 50C and the GPU 70C so is a cooler really even needed?

Question #2: If you answers yes to question #1 then which cooler do you recommend to keep a 17.3" high end gaming notebook cool?

    Thanks :)

Cooler is not needed, but it is good to have.

Coolermaster SF-19 will be the best match.

    Glad I could help :)

You should mod the SF-19 with the airfilter mod in my sig ;)

The Coolermaster Notepal U3 is a good choice. Worked well with my M17x R3. Also heard the NZXT Cryo LX is a good choice.

Max CPU temp of 50 degrees? Something is wrong. Not even desktops can manage those temps.

Lots of laptops can and should.. Not to mention Alienware's cooling is very good on the CPU and GPU. Laptops are always less powered than desktops to try and produce the less heat, while maintaining a safe range of power consumption.

On another note, I went to Target today to look at some coolers, and all the Targus ones looked cheap and plasticy. The fans were minuscule, and the Belkin ones looked even worse. The one thing I did see that I liked was this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834997524

I know it's not a cooler but it looks sturdy and comfortable. It was only $25 at the store, what do you guys think? Would it be able to keep my laptop a few degrees cooler than if it was on my lap?

Nah. Pics. 50c is many laptop's idle temp. You're at 50c peak? BS.

Desktops have far superior coolers; it's two worlds apart.

I'm guessing you don't know what load/idle means.

    EDIT: From NBC:

An i7 notebook quad core under load a 50c? Yeah, bull.

How can you know if you need a cooling peripheral if you won't even bother to accurately gauge your temperatures?

Are you going to go with the standard fans or swap them out? I might get an M18x (or 17x or a Sager NP8150) and I'm swapping them for some silent fans that can still cool :p

Edit: He's not trolling, just correcting the people that told you about the max temps... and letting you know that it runs hot.

I was planning to stick with standard. I'd rather deal with the sound then risk destroying my 2.5k laptop. It's way over my head how to do that anyway. :)

The R3 is a very cool machine, so it does not really need a cooler with fans. That Logitech lapdesk will help a bit, as it provides an even surface.

The M17x is cool to the touch, but that says very little about internal temperatures, which I've pointed out. It's not obscenely high in the notebook world, but it's no 50c. 90c CPU and 80c GPU (albeit the ATI card will run a bit hotter since it's quite a bit more powerful than the 460m in the review; and the 2720QM is better/hotter than the 2630QM as well).

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Alienware-M17x-R3-GTX-460M-i7-2630QM-Notebook.46187.0.html

I honestly don't see how I'm trolling. Are you mad that I'm not sugar coating my posts to pamper you and make you feel like a queen? If you actually try and take in what I'm posting, you might be a little less ignorant and a little more informed in your purchases.

I second the Cooler Master U3 idea.

I use one with my P150HM and it works well. Although like the M17x the P150HM really doesn't need a cooler. Still, it's sturdy and comfortable. :)

I was looking at that on newegg actually. It's only $27 and I really like the aluminum instead of plastic design.

Is it comfortable to have on your lap? It looks more suited for a desk.

    Hmm good point.

It is better suited to a desk but I have small legs so it rests on my knees comfortably. It gets less comfy if I move my legs apart though.

I don't know if the newegg one will drop your temps but it would probably be better in terms of comfort. I take it your going to be using this on your lap a lot?

Yeah, while in bed and on the couch. The only part of the computer that gets externally hot is the the RAM area which reaches about 100F at the most, which is right in the middle.

Everywhere else is relatively cool, never going over about 85F or so.
