I just ordered my ivy bridge HP dv6tqe and was close to ordering the Targus chill mat in accessories on HP's customization process and went to check out to find that the 33% off HP coupon DOES NOT apply to accessories but only the PC itself. So the chill mat that was $33 and I though would drop to $22 at checkout was now $40 because the normal sale was superceded by 33% off the pc....

THEREFORE, I just ordered a laptop and can't wait to use it, however, knowing that it CAN run pretty dern hot sometimes when it's really pushed, I figured it's best to get used to the chill mat from the beginning. (sorry I'm a bit wordy) So does anyone have a dv6tqe 15.6" or other 15.6" that runs hot? Do you have a chill mat or cooling pad of whatever and how does it work? The laptop has 4 USB ports and I won't use them all but replacing the port the mat takes would be a nice feature.

    Most Important Features:

    • Really cool (I just want the ability to really cool down the system even if it's a bit noisy, etc)

Good design (preferably a wedge design with some way for air to flow in from the sides so that it can easily function on a bed without fans being stiffled)

Metal (I would perfer this, but has to be sturdy)

Quiet Fans or Adjustable Fans (I don't want to always have huge fan noise if I don't have to)

Price ($50 Max and only if it's something great, otherwise less than $40 is my goal)

Portable? is this totally rediculous? could I take one to class?

I APPRECIATE INPUT FROM ANYONE ESPECIALLY OWNERS... also, If you're a college student bag suggestions are appreciated, I'm not sure if I want one backpack for laptop + books and supplies or separate bags but If I'm buying a $1000 pc it HAS to be well protected. I appreciate any help.

    Thanks,
    Dan

Dan, I'm in the same boat. Sent mine back after one week. Pegged all cores and gpu at over 100C under load. I will have it back tomorrow and will test before I use one of three coolers we have in the house. Many swear by the Cooler Master U3. Low price, 3 fans that can be positioned as needed. Worth a look.

I just got mine back from hp with no change to temps so it's back to TX for another round. What did you wind up selecting?

My dv6t order is on the way. I notice that a majority of dv6t owners have heating issues. Should I just return the laptop a day after I get it and buy another brand?

nzxt cryo lx may be the best (so i'm told) but it's 6.2lbs from the package all together and it's not all that portable. (I just got one)

I used to have a HP dv6000(from Staples). I played games on it (not that good of an idea). It ran super hot (felt like summer on Arizona in your hands).

    I would say something like
Newegg.com - Antec Cooling Pad Model NOTEBOOK COOLER CLASSIC B
at least I think this is the one my dad has and bought from Staples

It's not fully metal but the part covering the big fan is metal, it's plugs into USB like most cooling pads but it has the kind that makes sure you have all ports open for other things (didn't know what it was called). It's not super quiet but It's not super loud either. It really feels like an air conditioner (cooling wise if you put your hand over it not the sound). Also by all means it's 100% portable I swear it's barely even 1lbs even though it says it's 1.6lbs.

I don't know whether it will have the same effect for you but apparently it's 30$ and it ran pretty good for me; also my dad still has the cooling pad for the better part of 4 years now...

Coolmaster U2 or U3 is the best cooling pad for the dv6t. Reason is because you can move the fans around on the bottom and on the dv6t, most of the heat is on the left side where the WASD keys are. Place the fans there and your temps should never go above 75 C for anything. I've played games on it for 4 hours and it barely even got above 70c. I have the dv6t-7000 quad edition. The new dv6ts btw seem to have better cooling than previous gens.

I am just wondering about the Cooler Master U3. It is for a 17" laptop. Wouldn't that be a little large for a dv6t? I like the idea of three fans vs two, but I don't know if I want it being bigger than my laptop. Also a lot of people are saying the fans fail after about a month. Can anyone verify the reliability of the fans?
