I'm not looking for a little flimsy cable. I have a 17" notebook and 99% of the time it will be in my office hooked up to a 22" monitor.

I'm looking for something rugged and durable that ideally doesn't break the bank.

This notebook is basically a home computer with the added perk of easily being able to re-locate it.

Those looked pretty tight to me. But, I'm sure if I were to do a more indepth Google search, it will bring up more ;)

You aren't going to get much better than the steel cables the locks use above.

I'm looking for one that can't be simply yanked and it breaks off the part holding it onto the notebook.

How else are you going to attach it to the notebook? If someone really wants to steal your notebook, they are going to get it. These locks or any lock is only going to be useful to prevent people from taking a notebook that is just sitting around.

I'm looking for one that bolts into a desk or table. If someone breaks in and it's not easy to take most thieves will leave it as it takes time and creates noise. It doesn't need to be portable. I would only remove it if I am traveling.

OH...you didn't state that in your first post  ...So I was searching for the types of locks that most peep's use for the lappys.

I'm sorry about that Cin. I should have been more clear.

I do wonder how much those locks can take, but I'm thinking the weak part will be the plastic part of the notebook that would break no matter how strong the lock is.

The normal way is to use a cable similar to Cin's posted cables. One end is attached to the hole in the laptop, the other end attached to a solid fix object. These cables should work most of the time. Sometimes it's even possible that a stolen notebook, which was secured with such a cable is covered by insurance. But these cables are designed to be portable and to be used when you're on the way with the notebook.
With a larger tool it should be easy to cut the cable, it's also 'easy' to rip the plug out of the notebook. The casing is damaged then, but the notebook stolen with all the private data.

So if you search something more secure you'll have to search for something completely different. It's difficult to attach a stronger 'cable' to a notebook.
So the only solution I know is to use something like a bar which is placed across the notebook (maybe between display and keyboard), secured with a secure lock on both sides to the desk. But I think you'll have to build such a thing, don't know if you can buy such a thing.

Just keep in mind that any cable can be cut with bolt cutters. That is the rule in biking, even if you have a cable the size of your thumb it can be cut.

Not trying to thread jack, but I'm in the same boat as the OP. Let me know if I should have created my own thread.

I got a x301 but need a good security deterrent which I will transport with my computer at all times (I know that they don't truly work if someone really wants the computer).

Looking at the Tryten's I can't really tell which model I'd need, similarly I've seen this alarmed and other Kensignton's which look interesting. Then again I can't tell how much a difference a generic lock would be.

    Thanks!

Edit: To add, it looks like from some quick research that targus and kensington barrel key locks are pretty easy to pick which is unfortunate.
