I know this thread is a bit old but I actually owned both the Optoma and the Dell. The Dell unit is pretty good, the 50 lumens means it's better with the lights off, but I paid $449 for it and with the big power supply it's still a pretty big thing to fit in the suit case but decent for work related stuff if you remember to turn down the lights. It's only $349 now so I think it's a good deal.

I ended up returning the super expensive Optoma unit ($349) for the AAXA tech P1 projector which is only $239 and is brighter, higher resolution and has a ton more features:

I didn't like the Optoma much except it was very small... Unfortunately the P1 at 12 lumens is not that great for work related stuff, but it is pretty cool since it's battery powered you don't need that big power brick (and it's like 1/3 the size of the Dell).

I've heard Dell is coming out with a 100 lumen version of the M109 though so that might be the next ticket, but AAXA also has a 33 lumen battery powered unit that just released, so now I'm conflicted again!

That is cool, it might be good for the dorm if it is bright enough.

I've used the Dell projector and it's not very powerful/bright. What kind of atmosphere do you plan on using it in? You will definitely need a room that is as dark as possible for these super mini projectors.

can someone tell me if these projectors work with all laptops? I know there was a warning for the PK101 about composite outputs or such?
I have an HPPavilion Entertainment PC and I think the expansion port deals with composite...?

I believe the Dell, AAXA M1 works with all laptops since it's a direct VGA input. Since the Dell and AAXA are both 800x600 most laptops can scale to 800x600 - the Optoma I believe is like 320x230 or some very low resolution and I think most laptops cannot change resolution to that low.

For the AAXA M1 (I recommend this BTW I own it) make sure you get the M1 "plus" model for the VGA input, I bought the M1 standard model before but could not get the USB drivers to work properly with Windows 7. Like some of the USB monitors I have purchased I don't think USB displays are quite ready for prime-time yet...
