I'm looking for a PC to PC USB cable to transfer files from one laptop to another that doesn't require a special program installed on the old laptop to transfer files. Normally I would just use an external hd to copy files to the new laptop but my second set of replacement 8700m GTs for my old m9750 have died(overheating.. again.) which means it has no display output although windows starts normally. Since most PC to PC USB cables that I've seen have included in the instructions something along the lines of "Install software on the old/first computer after connecting to the new/second computer", that might not be the easiest thing to do.

So is there a simple PC to PC USB that when connected will show my old m9750 hard disk as an explorable drive in windows explorer on my new m17x without having to run through an installer?

No. Just get an external enclosure off eBay and swap the HDD from your busted lappy into it. They are cheap. Around $10 shipped.

as an example, look for Rocketfish RF-AHD25. Comes with everything you need.

There is a thing like this its that darn windows ez transfer cable. I think it only works on Vista/7 though and its like $30 in a store. Probably cheaper like $10 or $15 online.

But still its not going to let you read the files of the drive right out.

What you want to do is going to be easiest by doin what 2.0 said

You can also get something like this:

Premiertek SIDE-0002 Premiertek SIDE-0002 USB 2.0 to 2.5" / 3.5" SATA / IDE Hard Drive Adapter(Cable Adapter /Converter), with Auto Backup Button, Full 2A Power Supply from mwave.com

Its like a external enclosure without the encosure, its sole purpose is to test drives and do data transfers. I like it since it comes with a dedicated power supply so it will not rely on usb power (sometimes drives mess up on usb power only) and it work with not only sata but IDE drives.

Mclub is free to join, as you can see its only $13 for Mclub members .

I got it when it had a $15 mail in rebate and $5.00 coupon so it was free :D however as usual I forgot to send my rebate in on time.

I may try this as well. I'm sure I'll go through a few options now that I at least know it will be possible one way or another. At the moment I'm attempting to copy files on to an external HD connected to the old laptop by using shortcut keys/tabbing and searching with no display, "Flying blind" essentially.

I think it would be risky to use any form of computer to computer transfer with a broken gpu.

Id go directly to the hdd.

Even if the transfer cable works and you can just browse the files with no drivers, you would have to log into your windows account probably and your laptop may not even boot without a gpu present.

Yea, I think you're right in that usb cables aren't going to be practical after all. I went ahead and removed the hdd and ordered the kit.
