Hey all,
Just looking around for a notebook cooler, saw the Thermaltake T3000 which appeals because it is passive. Any one out there having tried one of these? It looks interesting for what it is.
I know the Zalman is a favorite (I would be looking at the 1000 model since I only have an Acer 5570, smallish laptop).

According to this review here it really does not do much if anything. It looks like chucking a wallet or book under your battery would have a similar affect. Personally I was really interested in this until I fount out that it wasnt as effective as advertised.

The_Observer 9262 is the best:)
A passive cooling always has it's own limitations.

this passive cooler from Targus seems to cool the laptop pretty well judging from the reviews. i was going to get one because it heightens the laptop as well as being able to swivel

I use a Notebook Radiation stand.
a Simple stand which gives elevation to notebook and creates a huge space at bottom to let the heat escape.
Passive cooling is enough if u dont do extraordinary Gaming.
the only cooler which really cools well is Zalman and its really expensive for a cooler.
so i bought a $10 Stand. -
Total cost for 4 school erasers. $3.49
Effectiveness = Priceless -
oh yeahhhh
in college i place my Cowhide Leather wallet under the Laptop...
and ensure its filled with coins..
so more the Coins, the more expensive the Passive Cooling -
I've "made" a passive cooler at home for use when I'm gaming. I took an aluminum panel from one of my old computer case. And I put two erasers under it to lift it up a bit to allow heat to dissipate from the panel. The notebook goes right on top of the aluminum panel without anything to raise it, because I want the panel to absorb the heat generated from the laptop. This resulted in about a 5C drop in my GPU temperature and also cools my HDD.

That seems a HUGE drop for basically a heatsink..doesn't the obstructed airflow hurt you? -
-
I mean the idea just seems like it wouldn't work that well to me.
I'm not questioning your honesty but I just don't know about a heatsink style cooler not even directly attached to the heated parts. -
I took two blue Ice packs and stuck my laptop on top of them. Passive cooling for less.

ouch. laptop cooling has never been a prob for me lol i see coolers as just a fancy accessory not really necessary
-
I have a new setup which will OWN Zalman NCs..
Will upload a pic shortly.. -
Yeah you may not wanna go shouting that "solution" across the board. If you're serious, it's not a good idea. And if you're joking, you might find someone who doesn't know you're joking try it and you've effectively ruined someone else's laptop. -
I wanna seriously know who honestly would use that idea.

Good thing I didn't suggest running your notebook outside in the snow then....

There are a lot of people out there who aren't computer savvy whatsoever, or are just plain dumb.
It's very very possible, trust me. I see worse every day.
