I have an Inspiron 1525 and wish to connect my camera (mini plug 3.5 I think) to enable me to show my pics on screen. I have a cable that enables me to use my TV but it has a video plug inlet and I would like to know what inlet to use on the laptop and if there is a cable to suit

The 3.5 out is an analog signal. You pretty much need a video input adapter like Pinnacle Dazzle, or a tv tuner that supports the rca in.

Using that method = 640x480 or 720x480, very blurry and not a convenient source. Best to view the pictures with the usb cable or reading from the memory card. Some cameras now support digital output like hdmi, but your not going to find an hdmi in on the laptop and even so your still best off reading the files.

Thanks ClutchX2, I may be a little missleading in my question in as much as I would like to use the Live View mode of my camera to enable me to see what I am taking as I take it, does this alter things ?

What brand do you have? Canon's EOS software should support tethering on all their dSLR's. Doing this you can see what your screen see's as well as control shooting.

I am not sure about other brands and if live view works with tethering I havent used it since just before models got live view capabilities.

No usb cable? 450D Plus USB Plus the software that came with it should allow you to tether it. I can imagine most situations will require the longest possible usb cable but still usb cables are kinda common. Hell the Powershot A640 supported tethering via usb.

I believe the program is called "EOS Viewer Utility" trying to find a screen shot all i found so far is mac, which apparently had the most issues with tethering - http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/canon/eos_40d-review/screen-sw-eos-viewer-remote.jpg

Does appear to support Live View, just need to find you a really long usb cable :)

Apologies for my ignorance but I didn't realise I should use the usb cable, it doesn't point that way in the instructions only to use the TV cable, I am much obliged for your input/help

Oh its cool lol, yeah if its not installed find the disc that came with the camera and install the EOS Viewer Utility. I do not know if you need to flip a setting in the camera or not but it should be pretty straight forward.

Will provide the best results as well as some nice camera control, best thing since the shutter cable was invented.

Another pretty cool thing canon software does is remote capture. Doesn't work with all cameras but it's cool to operate the camera with your laptop.
