My GPU has been running hot these days in the summer (ambient temp 30 C+), it has gone up to 87 C in some games, the left palm rest area was uncomfortably hot. Today I placed a table fan next to the laptop and did some gaming, surprise, surprise! It peaked at 82 C, mostly hovered around 80 C!! CPU temp was lowered by around 5 C as well!! My zalman NC-2000 cooler only reduces the load temp of GPU by around 5-6 C!

Those who have high temp problem with CPU/GPU should definitely try it! And remember don't put the fan in a place where it could block or reduce the ventilation of your laptop (eg: don't place the fan towards your main vents of your laptop!)

It seems that a 9-cell battery reduces operating temperatures by almost 5-7 *C. I dont have a 9 cell but I have tried to get the effect by placing a 200 page book under the 6-cell battery to emulate a 9-cell battery tilt. And it actually dropped the temperatures. This had an effect on both CPU and GPU temps. Gonna order a 9-cell soon. Massive temp difference, even when the laptop is idle (I usually get 48-52 without the book underneath and 42-46 when the book is underneath the battery). I also re-applied the thermal grease. Am using MX-3.

Sorry chief but that discovery was made a long time ago. In fact, I went you one better and place my unit in line with the A/C duct. My fingers freeze, but my laptop stays nice and frosty.

On the other hand none of these homemade cooling solutions look as pretty as those neat cooler though. :(
