Was trying to play my roommate's mp3 player through my laptop speakers the other day, via the mic jack, but couldn't really get it to work. It records the input fine, and I tried changing the jack to read as a line-in instead of a mic, but to no avail.
I tried to use the fix described here but I could not find the key in the registry.
I have the Sigmatel audio onboard, other spec in my signature.
If anyone could offer some suggestions, even a program to use to get this to work, that would be just peachy.

try this...plug your mp3 player into the line in/ microphone port using a line in..line out cable.
Double click the volume icon in the system tray on the bottom left of the screen in windows XP.
Make sure that the Microphone and Line In volumes are not muted.
Go to start, all programs, accesories, entertainment and then sound recorder.
Play the file on your mp3 player and click record on your laptop. Just record the music, and it'll play through your speakers.
And then just delete the file once you've listened to it. -
This fix worked for me on a 1505. XM thru laptop to stereo. No recording nonsense:
