Hey guys, just a quick poll to see how you guys usually carry your notebooks around.
I'll be starting class soon and I'll be carrying 4-5 books with me to classes everyday, and while I'd like the convenience of a laptop backpack I don't want my laptop being crushed with all my heavy books. Keeping my notebook in a separate bag seems a lot safer to me...

I have my laptop in a soft case in my backpack

Laptop backpack.....fitting everything into one, would be easier..than lugging both the b.pack and laptop bag around
Better ergonomics for yourself..and a free hand!
If the backpack doesn't come with good protection on the inside..you can always add a sleeve...just thoughts

depends on hwo the bag is built i suppose in ur situation. I have the big D901c, so i got the Targus XL, and that thing actually straps the laptop to the back of the bag. SO any textbooks fall freely away from the laptop.

I've carried my laptop around campus both ways. I did cause some accidental screen damage by carrying too many testbooks in the backpack. On the days that I have a "lighter" course load, I can safely put the laptop in the backpack. One trick that did work for me was covering the keyboard and touchpad with an optical cloth before I closed the lid. It provided the extra cushion that I needed. Also, my cheap CaseLogic laptop bag from Wal-Mart turned out to be waterproof, and the backpack certainly wasn't.

More specifically, my vote was for a messenger bag + sleeve combo.
If you're out of high school, and not heading to the gym, I just don't like the look of backpacks.

Have you decided which one you are going with??

But I must admit that I got mine for free as we have an eyeglass lens manufacturing plant in town. As long as the cloth is lint-free, big enough to cover the keyboard and touchpad, and not so thick that it stresses the hinges, and soft enough not to scratch anything, it should be fine. -
I use laptop bag that I put in my backpack. To me, having a laptop backpack is like screaming, "EXPENSIVE EQUIPMENT HERE! STEAL ME!"
