So I recently purchased a portable laptop (no gaming) and need a new laptop mouse. I was looking at logitech mice and currently looking at M705 or anywhere mouse.
I will not always have a nice mousepad and "smooth" surface. I may use my mouse on top of glass table, etc. For that purpose, anywhere mouse is the go, right? Not entirely sure if there are good alternatives. I am trying to stay below $50 but if necessary, I will spend higher than $50 (but definitely less than $100). Thanks.

The Nano is great, nice and small but doesn't work on glass. I recommend that you test whichever mouse claims to be working on glass, as i had experience that though they claimed they didn't.

m705 is too pricey just so you could use it on a glass surface (paying a premium for darkfield technology which is pretty much just a gimmick), the logitech nano/m305 is just as good with better battery life.
the m705 has 2 extra thumb buttons though that's very useful which the nano series doesn't have -
darkfield technology appears to be working well based on other reviews. -
Yes, it is a "nice-to-have". But the drawbacks of a Logitech Anywhere MX outweigh the benefits of that very circumstantial benefit. The Logitech Anywhere MX is about $20-$25 more expensive than a Logitech M705 (Marathon Mouse), has a flatter shape and is less comfortable to use, and has batteries that die in about 3 months (versus 3 years in a Marathon Mouse).
Skip the Logitech Anywhere MX. If you just want a simple, straightforward, reliable general-purpose mouse, go with a Logitech M705 (Marathon Mouse).
The Logitech M705 is the Marathon Mouse, which does not have Darkfield imaging sensor, and lasts 3 years on a pair of AA batteries. That definitely has longer battery life than the Logitech Nano / M305.
The Logitech M905 is the Anywhere MX, which does have the Darkfield imaging sensor. That mouse lasts about 1-3 months on a pair of AA batteries. -
I guess Nano (M305) may be sufficient then? Still shopping while waiting for my laptop to arrive!

Having both the Logitech Marathon AND Anywhere MX, my vote goes simply to where i'm using it.
If i'm in the living room using my mouse on the armrest of the couch, Anywhere MX all the way. Works on cloth, glass, carpet, pants, even the dog.
If I'm at a table using my mouse for gaming/precision tasks, Marathon for the win. 3 year battery, more ergonomic and better build quality than the Anywhere MX, more thumb buttons.
I paid $35 for my Anywhere Mx and $25 for the Marathon. Just wait to get them on sale, and you can pick up a deal. -
For me personally, I prefer a Logitech M705 Marathon Mouse simply because I like the larger shape (more comfortable for me), the better scroll wheel, and the extra thumb buttons.
If none of those things matter to you, then it honestly doesn't matter which mouse you buy. Any mouse will get the job done. -
I guess it depends on what you're looking for. I almost never use a mouse with any of my laptops as they're actually used portably - so on the occasions I have to carry a mouse, I carry the Microsoft Arc Touch. It's not exactly what you could call a 'full-time mouse', far from it, but it does the job - and the Bluetrack does work *almost* anywhere. Just my 2c.

Darkfield is not a gimmick. It works extremely well on glass, my jeans, my blanket, etc. There's obviously a price premium, but I don't see how some of you guys are like "pshaw, useless!". It's great if you're on a plane or in an airport or have a glass coffee table that you want to use your PC on.

Heh sorry, I did mix up my model numbers. I was referring to the m905 and it's gaming variant m950.

logitech m505 and the m905, the only advantage the m905 has is the glass surface and 2 extra buttons.
battery life is also worse and the change from AAA to AA batteries.
don't get me wrong i've used logitech products for years (m505, G700 currently), but the added premium so you could use it on a glass surface which can be fixed by using a magazine or news paper etc in an airport setting is just.... i dunno gimmicky in terms of marketing terms -
My buddy picked up the M505 and has had nothing but positive things to say about it. Think it's definitely a solid bet.

A gimmick is useless. Psyko headsets have speakers in the headband. That's a gimmick. Better tracking on unconventional surfaces is actually useful. Maybe you like mousing on newspapers. -
I picked up the Logitech Anywhere Mouse MX at Amazon when they were on sale. It's an excellent mouse, one of the very best I've ever used. It's comfortable, the battery life is excellent and it's fairly lightweight.
My only criticism is that it sometimes loses connectivity for whatever reason, and I have to remove the Unifying receiver and plug it back in for the mouse to work again. Very annoying, but it does happen once in awhile. -
In any case, if you feel justified by paying that much on a mouse so you could use it on glass then by all means have fun with it.
Oh and could you provide some proof it has better construction than the m505 and m705? A link to an official statement perhaps or some video explaining how it's better than the rest in terms of construction coz expensive doesn't always mean better.
Cheers.... now where's that newspaper of mine...need to finish that sudoku puzzle while mousing on it.

Heh sorry, I tend to be a little passionate on my post sometimes
As for the anywhere mouse getting disconnected sometimes, check your battery also happens with the m505 when batt is low

I just think it's funny that you're so dismissive of Darkfield. -
Same reason I find it funny people falling for it, if it was sold cheaper instead of advertised as a high end product but marginally just better than the cheaper option then I myself would've bought one, I mean the price was almost double the of the m505 when it was released.
The g700 is more preference though and the wireless function I also consider as a gimmick (lasts at most 8 hours) so it ended up becoming a wired mouse, and build quality is worse that the older gaming mice of logitech like the m5xx series even though it was way more expensive.
(Too bad I found this out months after I bought it)

Sorry to bring up an old post.
Quick question, does the M-705 Marathon mouse have a tilt scroll wheel so you can scroll horizontally?
Thanks! -
