Look for something that supports powered USB so you won't have to connect the drive to an AC power source.

I would recommend anything made by Western Digital or Seagate, who are really the leaders in the external hard drive segment.

I'd suggest a Western Digital Passport Essential. I got a 500gb one and am very satisfied with it.

You can get up to 1TB on a 2.5" external HDD w/ WDD. Think Seagate is only up to 640GB (if you even need that much).

Yeah, Western Digital Passports are a nice design and profile.

The Freeagents seem to be cheap and versatile.

Personally I prefer the Freecom Toughdrives. Captive USB plug + ruggedness = never a "doh" moment.

    I've got a WD Passport at 500GB :)

Maximum write speed I got out of it (sequential write for a large file, empty drive) was around 22MB/s
I think I can extract around the same, maybe up to 24MB/s read speed from it. (sequential read that is)

well why not buy an esata enclosure with usb 2.0 and sata this is much better than the esata usb hard disk alone.it gives u freedom to convert any standard sata hard disk to usb and if u have esata port than u can get really fast speed.
plus u can buy new hard disk next time and fit it into the enclosure.in case of usb hard disk u will have to buy a new hard disk next time, which would be costly than a sata hard disk
an e sata enclosure is about 29$ and hard disk 1tb about 80$-110$.
guess u might think about it.i personally like it this way.

Are you talking about 2,5" drives or 3,5" drives?

And speaking of "ready made drives" - you can always open the case and swap out what's inside :)

well 3.5" is what iam talking abt though the 2.5"is also available but i guess the enclosures do not hold more than 500gb hard disks

WD offfers a 1TB Passport drive - at least on their site last I checked - that's a 2,5" one - but I checked passport enclosures do not have screws :(

(A no name one I left with my grandfather has screws)

I dunno... as much as pre-made external HDD enclosure solutions offer convenience, I would still opt for building my own. Grab a good 2.5" hard drive, Western Digital are great for this purpose, and an awesome 2.5" external HDD enclosure.

I really like what Vizo is doing with their external enclosures, and the SHE-260ST is a great product. I've been using mine for for awhile now (and yes, that is the review I wrote on it). =)
