You want portable speakers? Check out the review we did a few weeks back of the Altec Lansing set, they're very nice.

As for headphones, the Shure E3c are very good and can be had for $120 or so from several retailers.

Thank you Brian. I'm going to check out the Altec Lansing review.

How about noise cancelling headphones like "Bose QuietComfort® 2", which are supposed to be good, but are really pricey ($299.00). Does anyone know more affordable alternatives?

    Best regards

I would recommend any of the top 5 ones listed on this page: http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_BrowseCatalog-Start?CategoryName=pa_PADepartmentAccessories_Headphones_Fontopia%2e%2fEarbud&Dept=audio

I have the EX71SL, and they are great. But now that I noticed that sony has released some new designs with an over the ear thingy, I think I might get that too. Cause mine slip out of my ear if I am moving around too much!

If you are looking for headphones, do pay a visit to www.head-fi.org

I bought the Etymotic ER-6i from www.discountheadphones.com for about $160 Canadian and they are great especially for travelling, as they are canalphones that offer tremendous isolation. The sound quality is also top class though lacks thumping bass.

I would not consider noise-cancelling headphones though because I think those are just overpriced gimmicks. You end up paying the money for noise-cancelling technology and not the headphones/good sound quality themselves.

i'm surprised no one has suggested Grado. Unquestionably the best headphones for the price. Check out their reviews - you can't go wrong.

I have the basic SR60 and it is terrific. When one of my tech buddies suggested Grado and instantly laughed when I saw what they looked like...but that quickly ended when I used them.

Grados are open cans, so they do not isolate at all. Which means when you are on a train or in the library, outside noise leaks in and YOUR loud music leaks out as well.

That's why I suggest either closed-headphones or canalphones.

    Also check out www.headphone.com

true, some noise leaks out....but the sound quality is still an A+. Besides, do you care if *some* music pops out?! As long as you're not watching porn, who cares.

on a more serious note, I find the noise leakage to be minimal, so it's not that big of a deal....unless you will crank the music to umpteen decibels.
