Is it safe to use a 300 W DC to AC power inverter with the Dell Inspiron 510m? The inverter creates a modified sine wave. Do I need surge protection? How much power will it draw from a car battery? Are there any precautions I should take / things to be careful of?

    Hey there,

A modified sine-wave inverter should be okay with the laptop, as the charger will regulate the DC output correctly even with a dirty or bad mains supply, so an inverter should be fine.

My dad uses an inverter (crappy square -wave) in his car with his lappy in remote areas. :D

You could even test the output voltage of the charger with a multimeter while powering with the inverter and then on mains.
If there is a difference in voltage then I would not recommend it, although there should none at all.

Feel free to ask if you need any extra explanation.

And good luck on the smoke test. ;)

    Cheers!
