This is my first post and therefore hello all.

I have a Lenovo Y50-70 that has an issue with the battery/motherboard..

Basically, the laptop won't charge the battery and if you install the battery while power is connected it will reboot. I have had this assessed by a Laptop repairer and it is uneconomical to fix (approximately $1200 aus). FYI -The laptop repairer specialises in motherboard repairs.

The laptop works fine with no battery inside and connected to power. Therefore, the thought occurred - would it be possible to get some portability back by buying a power bank? Would a power bank work without a battery installed? and what power bank would have the juice to power the laptop?

    Thanks for the input.

    Azz

@Azzriel did you try it with another battery? If it fails with any battery, here's the solution. Laptops ain't rocket science; replacing a failed part yourself is usually easy, fast and cheap.

    Mutliple batteries have been tried.

I thought about a refurbished motherboard, but I cannot find an exact replacement.

The part number is 5B20G57045 - i have a screenshot, but imgr is not working for me.

The laptop has a 4th gen i7 with 4k display in it.

@Azzriel out of curiosity, why would you need an exact replacement? Check the service manual and schematics. If you have some doubts when ordering, just ask motherboard seller to make close-up photos and compare with yours, e.g. if you think there were boards with different interfaces (eDP vs LVDS) used.

To be honest - i don't know, I just assumed.

I will take a few more photos and send them to the Ebay seller you listed.

I have never replaced a laptop motherboard before - few desktop ones.

    Thanks for your help.

@Azzriel I googled a bit more and seems there were more variations of these notebooks than covered in service manual I linked. Safest bet would be to partially disassemble the laptop and make photos of your motherboard. Some motherboard are labeled DIS 4G, others DIS 2G - it seems you need the one with DIS 4G. Bottom line, there is a lot of googling to be done. Still easier than to mess with powerbank, in my opinion.

    @Starlight5

I have managed to upload the photo of the motherboard.

I can't find any reference to the DIS 4g or Dis 2g on any marks.

Sorry couldn't get the image preview to work.

Just right click and open pic in new tab and it will display.

I would not have the knowledge to do the rewire.

An external battery is an option.. but i would rather replace the m/board

    Thanks for the tips.
