    Hello.
I'm trying to buy a printer for university use.
I want a cheap one, I don't really care if it prints like 5 pages per minute (as long as it prints).
It would be nice also it is more leaning to the portable/small side.

Where do you live? If you live in Canada, NCIX offers free all in one inkjet printers all the time. They have rebates attached to them which always comes back ( at least for me). I got like 5 free AIO inkjet printers from them this way.

    What printer do you want.
Do you need color prints or only B/W? How much do you intend to print.

However you can chose between Ink jet printer and Laser printer.

For casual print outs, color, simplicity and small rooms better get an Ink jet printer. They can be really cheap if you buy a printer for which refilled cartridges are available on eBay, like the Canon permanent printhead printers where you only have to change the ink cartridges.

If you have to print more often, and because price is an issue, only in B/W then better get a small but compact B/W Laser printer. The printer is more expensive, but the toner is often less expensive, the toner is water proof and they print faster. Therefore they don't smell that great if used in small rooms and are more difficult to repair yourself or to use cheaper refill toner. Also I think it's questionable if small laser printers are cheaper than ink jet printers with refill cartridges over the long run. I even think they are more expensive.

Your third option is an all-in one device (scanner/printer/...)

I use a laser printer at school. I bought it new for like $50. I mostly got it because I was lazy to go down to the school labs to print. I rarely if ever need color prints. However it really depends on your major.

I was thinking of buying it online. But I might buy this in store so I can see the size and not get a surprise online...

I use my Canon iP4000. Dunno what version they are in of the printer but I'm pretty happy with it. Prints on both sides of the paper and it's pretty cheap for ink. Don't really care about paper as I just go to the library or the printer lab downstairs and steal their paper. :p

Good idea to see it for yourself first. Then use the model to try to get a better offer on line somewhere.

I used a paper-port scanner/printer type device, the size of a folding umbrella.

    cheers ...
