i know im not the only one who hates paying those outrageous prices for ink for printers. my question is- is there a way to hook an "old" fax up to a computer.? (old meaning one that uses heat-sensitive paper)

Are you serious? Not without hours of work on the hardware and even then you may never find appropriate drivers.

Why, Sir?
Printers are cheap now!
I've seen them as low as $20 bucks (US)...
Hell, people GIVE them away! Look around. Garage sales, swap meets, Used...ect. They make their money off the Ink. Not the printers these days. But, you can get Knock off Ink WAY cheap too (Ink Station...just one of hundreds)! Try Looking for mobile printers too; small light weight. I got a cannon (BJC-80) for $30 (US)!!! Prints B/W & color just fine.
