    Hi guys,

I just ordered a Dell 2007WFP 20" monitor to go along with my Dell D420 laptop.

The D420's screen has a resolution of 1280x800, while the 2007WFP monitor has a resolution of 1680x1050.

Will the laptop automatically "know" to use the larger resolution when I plug in the monitor? Or do I need to manually change the screen resolution each time?

    Or ????

Your video card might not support that high of a resolution, in that case the Monitor will revert down to the highest resolution possible.

If memory serves me correctly that laptop has either the GMA 900 or 950. It will handle that resolution over VGA without a problem.

    Yep... max res is 1920 x 1200.

Plus I might get the Media Base for the D420. It has a built-in DVI input.

So, with that in mind, does the system automatically choose the highest res of the screen? Or do I need to manually change it every time I plug in the monitor?

You may have to change it once, but it should remember each time you connect it. You do this in your properties in Windows, right click on the desktop. Externals are nice, I have a 19inch one, HOWEVER, night 2004 has me beat with his Dell 24 inch beast!! =))

    Must be nice! ;)

Although switching over from the 12.1" laptop screen to a 20.1" external monitor will probably seem like a beast to me!

Lol, yeah I had gotten a 15 inch notebook and was like wow this is awesome. I had a 12 inch before that. Then I got spend happy one day and got the 19inch and it made my 15 inch look not so great anymore. When I have to take my notebook with me it is always an adjustment since the 19 inch is my main monitor. Good luck and enjoy!

Thanks, I'll need the luck. Apparently there's a " Dell Lottery" with this monitor: if lucky you get an S-IPS panel (good), if not so lucky you get an S-PVA panel (bad).

    I'm keepin' my fingers crossed...

The new monitor just arrived, and it looks AMAZING.

Compared to my 12.1" screen, this thing is big. I'm really glad I didn't get anything larger, otherwise I'd have to sit across the room to comfortably look at the screen! ;)

By the way... I won the Dell Lottery. Luckily for me, I got an S-IPS panel. Yeah! I'm very happy about it -- especially considering the price I paid! :)
