I have got the 5th gen 60gb ipod and its asking me to reformat the disk when i plug it in. It wont let me cancel and at least get all the music before I do.

So Im just wondering if anyone knows a way to go around this issue bc I have 60gb of music on there and I dont want it to go to waste. lol the music on it would cost more to replace than the ipod itself...

btw, my macbook was stolen which had all the music on it, so im not trying to steal this music or w/e u may think, from someone elses ipod.

    any ideas would help =)

You can copy + paste the contents of the iPod to your own hard drive. Either make sure hidden files and folders are enabled and copy the music folder from your iPod, or use a third party program that lets you transfer music from your iPod to your hard drive, there's a million of them out there.

Also, make sure you don't have your iPod set to automatically update...if you disable this, you won't have to erase everything to add more music to it.

You are accessing the ipod from windows correct? Try this (from a PC). Windows/OS X will read FAT32 just fine. :p That's your typical flash drives' format. OS X will read NTFS (widnows HDD format) fine, just won't write it.

iPod used with Mac = HFS+ format
iPod used with Windows is like Johnny said = FAT32

I actually had that issue once where my iPod Video was synced exclusively with my MacBook and then I had to send it off for repairs. Well, I had never clicked the little tab in iTunes that says to mount iPod as an external drive and I couldn't get anything off of it because it wouldn't mount under Windows because Windows doesn't understand HFS+. I think exFAT is supposed to fix a ton of interoperability issues between various OS's, but it's not widely deployed yet.
