Ok, well I just got my new monitor in -- a Samsung 2433bw.
Preface: I'm using this screen as an external for my HP dv7t and connecting with the AV cord. This monitor does not have a HDMI but it does have DVI. Unfortunately, my dc7t does not have a DVI port; it does have a HDMI port, though.
Now for my question: I have read somewhere before that I would get a better picture quality if I used a DVI to HDMI converter as opposed to just using the AV like I am now.
Is there any validity to this? How much of a difference is this? Will I need any other components than a DVI to HDMI converter if I do this?
Thanks, I really hope someone can help -- I don't know a whole lot about monitors.

What exactly do you mean AV cord?
Is it something like S-video to Composite
Or VGA to Component ?
Or the standard VGA cable ?
If it is the first case then definitely you’ll see a HUGE improvement, because S-video only supports standard def (720×480 / 720×576) where DVI can support full HD up to the maximum resolution of your screen and it will be very sharp. However if you use a component cable or a standard VGA cable then you can still use the maximum resolution of your monitor, but the picture might have slight distortions (ghosting, blurriness) due to signal attenuation. Therefore still DVI is better (because there is no digital to analog conversion).
You only need a simple HDMI to DVI cable like this:
I use one myself, and it is far better than connecting over standard VGA cable. -
So, it sounds like getting the DVI to HDMI is definitely worth the money then. -
For a 24" screen, yes I think you should get a digital cable. Besides, they are cheap, you can easily find one for around $20 or sometimes even less. Image quality difference may not be that significant, but I can assure you there will be a noticeable improvement.

You would definitely see a difference going with either DVI or HDMI vs. the VGA.
