Anybody see this yet? I was poking around newegg because of the $25 off $100 code seeing if I could pick up a 2nd mechanical keyboard (now that I have one at home I really want one for work)

When I saw this I was like wow that thing looks sweet! Red is a color not often seen for backlight and the design looks nice too.

I really wanted a Das Keyboard Ultimate Silent because I wanted a quiet keyboard for work that nobody would mess with (no labels on the keys :D) also I wanted to try the MX Brown switches since I already have the MX Blues. (Razer Blackwidow is MX Blue)

But the Das was $149 + $7.49 shipping

The Razer was $140 w/ free shipping and I kinda miss having a backlight on my keyboard (old keyboard before the Das was a Saitek Eclipse)

So despite the fact me and Razer have a bad past (every product I ever got from them was overpriced, or broken, or disappointing) I went ahead and got this and its on the way.

I'll do a nice little review of it for you guys and let you know how it stacks up to the Das Keyboard.

Now I just need a Deck Legend one day and I will be totally fulfilled in the keyboard department. They have a super super awesome green color but unfortunately only with the MX Black switches when I want one with the MX Clears :(

So consider this thread the announcement of the review for this keyboard and a open discussion about this keyboard.

This red backlighting is the main reason that makes me want to get it over a Das Keyboard :(

    That and UK prices :p

There is little doubt in my mind that the Das Keyboard is the better built keyboard and better typing keyboard.

So it maybe a toss up in the air to some people to sacrifice a bit of the quality for the looks and features.

How much quality is the question, since I have the Das Keyboard I can give a perfect direct comparison on how they feel and work. I have seen some nasty build quality issues with the Blackwidow, sticking keys, cracking keys, double key presses.

The Das however has none of those issues that I have seen, it also has the better N-Key Rollover and PS2 support (not playstation 2 lol)

Yeah. The quality issues are what worry me the most. Sigh.

Why would people at work mess with your keyboard in the first place?

I share the same attitude as you when it comes to Razer products. In my case however, there has never been a single compelling reason for me to throw my money Razer's way based purely on a peripheral's aesthetics.

Regardless, I hope your Razer purchase doesn't turn out to be a turd, but as with all things Razer, I wouldn't be surprised if it did.

Hehe... I'm not surprised that Razer would release a product like this.

But seriously, did you look at Steelseries G7 as a mechanical keyboard option, if you didn't want a Deck?

I've been considering the "normal" BlackWidow Ultimate for a while. The market for backlit mechanical keyboards isn't exactly huge :p

As far as I know, the only difference between the normal and DA2 editions are coloring and decoration.

Well, let us know how it goes.

Yeah DA2 just has the design and red LED instead of the white/blue and the ultimate just has lighting when the non ultimate has no lighting.

I think the Ultimate has a few other things that the non-Ultimate version doesn't, like 3.5mm audio and USB pass-through ports. The price difference would be a bit steep for nothing but lights, even by Razer standards :p

Heh, even Razer standards? Maybe pushing it :D

Now that I have that huge ripper xxl mat I am not using my wrist rest for my mouse anymore and I noticed its making my grip change from more of a claw to a palm. so now I am kind of tempted to get a mamba again... but now I want a RED glow mamba & dock not blue... if they do that I think it may be a must buy.

I wonder how hard it would be to mod it myself....

nearly impossible prolly i find it sad raser does not have a raserFX that would allow switching led colors i'd pay the extra to make it match my keyboard

especialy since my mamba is now over a year old and stil kicking the poor little thing has gone through some severe punishment but it's still kicking (i should test the wireless thougha long time since i used it)

I have a regular blackwidow, no backlight. Quality on this keyboard is amazing, and I have to say, for 69.99, it was the best accessory purchase I've ever made. It oozes quality. The only time IMO that a backlight is necessary is when you need to adjust to a new keyboard/keyboard layout (when typing in the dark)

I can take pics of my blackwidow if needed :) It really is a damn good keyboard!

the question to you would be have you tried a better keyboard to know that its not up to par?

Just using both side by side today I can tell you the Blackwidow does not hold a candle to the Das anywhere in terms of build quality or the way the keys press and feel.

I can understand if the BW was my first keyboard how I would feel about it, the change from membrane to mechanical switches is amazing, but when you feel a better mech keyboard then you really understand the difference.

I've tried both of the Steelseries mech. keyboards (including the discontinued one) and I have to say I really like the feel of the Blackwidow. Now obviously coming from my membrane switch Dell USB Multimedia keyboard (hell, I used to think that thing was amazing) I would think the Blackwidow was amazing.

Before investing $70 I really read a lot about mechanical keyboards and the various types of switches. At my workplace (private school) they actually have those IBM mech. keyboards. My boss doesn't realize how much those are worth :p
