Yo,has anyone here tried out the Razer Ironclad?
-
Why would you spend roughly $60 on a mousepad?
-
I have a personal bias against Razer. I believe they use deceptive market on their website, and I personally don't want to buy products that resort to deceptive marketing.
It's a personal bias on my part. There are several people here that have bought Razer products for years, and love those products. So you have to consider both viewpoints.
But let me ask you a quick question: What does a $60 mousepad do that a $10 mousepad cannot? Maybe you have a particular preference for aluminum for some reason. I am a mouse snob, and use a $6 OCZ Behemoth cloth/rubber mousepad. It works, and I'd buy one again in a heartbeat. -
I have the Ironclad, I got it last week. So far it is awesome. Easily the best mouse pad I've ever used. I'm using it with my R.A.T. 9 and it is a great combination. I've tried my Orochi on it and that works great too. It is kinda weird first using it after a long time since I like to keep my room temp cool and the mouse pad is cold to the touch, but warms up quickly.
This is better than the Megasoma, Destructor, my previous mouse pad was Qck and I found the cloth material not a little rougher pretty quickly. I only used it for a few months, it is still usable but tracking isn't as fast as I like. That was my first cloth mouse in quite sometime. Before that I was using a GameRigs Battlemat with hard plasticly surface, before that I was using a SteelSeries FragMat with hard plasticly surface.
I've used a lot of different mouse pads over the years, so far this is my favorite. It is very similar to the SteelSeries SX but I like the IronClad color better and it just feels nice. Well worth $50 street price.
Here's a quick shot.

I feel the same way about Razer as Kent said. However, I do have the Razer vespula which is a hard gaming pad as well. It is pretty good and half the price of the iron clad. I don't think that price is worth it. I am not a fan of cloth ones and the vespula is two sided. The best mouse pad I think is the Razer exactmat. But, they discontinued that one and the vespula replaced it. It's the only Razer product I will ever buy, because they admittedly do probably make the best mouse pads. In my opinion.
Edit: I use my G700 on this pad, btw...works really well. -
I use this cheap mouse pad I got at Target or somewhere about 8 years ago, all it says on it is optical, it's awesome.
-
You know, that $8 mousepad looks like it would do the job just fine.
I am not a fan of hard mousepads. I am not even a fan of mousepads in general. I used to mouse on my bare desk surface, but was forced to get a mousepad because of a mouse I used to own (Cyborg R.A.T.7). That mouse was incredibly comfortable, but had an absolutely garbage imaging sensor. Would not track reliably on less-than-perfect mousing surface like a bare desk... and even on a mousepad, it would have problems. -

I do not think a hard mousepad would work well for me no matter what the brand. But yeah $60 is a total rip off no matter how you look at it.
They probably get those things mass produced at less than $5.00 each. -

This thread had made me think of replacing my QcK Mini with a QcK+ but they are sold out everywhere
Kinda want a huge mouse pad to put my keyboard ontop of it, I also like how its so thin so that its not like I have a raised surface for the mouse its just a part of the desk.
Edit: nvm I want one of these now - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826991001 -
Razer | For Gamers. By Gamers.? | Online Store - Razer Goliathus Extended Speed Edition
Sounds like pretty much exactly what you're looking for. Huge soft mouse mat, plenty of room for your keyboard, and it comes in both Speed and Control varieties, depending on how you like your surface to be textured.
Anyway, the Ironclad looks sweet, but even I (a blindly brand-loyal Razer fanboy idiot according to many) think that price is quite a stretch.
I've had an eXactMat for a little over two years now, and I love it. I'm thinking of buying another one while I can still find them so I'll still be set years down the road when this one eventually gets worn out. On that note, it's still in great shape. I use the Speed side the vast majority of the time, and it's still super slick. My mice are all still on their original feet, too.
I got the Vespula last year, and it's basically the eXactMat made of plastic instead of aluminum. It's got a slight flex to it if you force it, but otherwise it's sturdy; I use it on my bed and other non-flat surfaces and keep it in my backpack since it's lighter than the eXactMat, which stays on my desk.
In case you couldn't tell, I love hard mouse surfaces. Can't stand soft mats, and the thought of mousing directly on my wooden desk gives me the chills. -
No more aluminum mousepads for me.
Tried a Steelseries SX, and my TactX slid better on the table than it did on that piece of garbage. I thought it was supposed to be "ultra smooth" with almost no friction. I bought a $20 one and it's much better. My next one will likely be cloth, because they won't wear out as fast as hard surfaces. -

Also Size
XTRAC 36"w x 18"h x 1/8"
Goliathus 36"w x 11.5"h x 1/6"
Its quite a bit shorter, I want the size of the XTRAC less prone to slide around and it will maybe even dampen the sound my microphone picks up -
I think the whole mousing texture thing is a load of crappola, and I have an affinity for Razer products.
I did 3 reviews on Razer products for this site a few years back, and Razer sent me out an eXactMat to test and review as well. It was solid for what it was, but I wouldn't dare pay for one, and from what I know, the eXactMat hasn't even had anything close to replace it in terms of quality. I actually reviewed it, and then sold it less than a week later, and went back to my cheap-o cloth pad that I bummed from my office at work.
TL;DR - I'd pass on the fancy mousing surfaces. This is one area to buy economically. -
Ah well,as tear taker said,"to each his own".I don't earn much,& i do feel its a bit overpriced, but considering its durability,i am sure i won't be changing it anytime soon, call it a long time investment, love the cool feeling too.
Anyway,performance-wise,i would say it has the sleek glide of the Goliathus,& control somewhere in between Megasoma & Scarab.just my 2 cents. -
$60 bucks is a bit of a stretch for a piece of equipment that really doesn't do much.
i, personally, have been using an razer exactmat (control side) for about 2-3 years now and have loved every bit of it. i feel that if u are a casual or general user, a cheapo mat should be able to handle the light stuff u throw at it.
for gamers though, it's totally different. the perfect mouse + mouse pad combo can make THAT much of a difference when u are fragging ppl online. the exactmat is the first "hard" mat i've ever owned. before the exactmat, i had the same mindset as some of u guys where a mousepad wasn't considered as an important accessory. after 2-3 years of use, i can honestly say that it was worth every single penny. the exactmat really enhanced everything i do on my computer. plus, the durability just cannot be matched by a cheapo pad. -
I'm a gamer too though. And I don't even bother with a mousepad. I just use my bed, my desk, a table, whatever is around. It never seems to make a difference.
-
me, personally, i would never game on different surfaces. one of the biggest factors in competitive gaming is muscle memory. u'r taking away your advantage when u'r constantly switching surface types. plus, there's no way u will get the same kind of control and consistency of a proper mouse + mousepad pairing compared to say a table top or something like that. -
Alright lets try and stay on topic, the poster is wondering if anyone has had experience with the pad not what you think about it.
@OP: Ive had a chance to try it out in store, Ill admit it was rather awkward but that would probably disappear. The only real difference I felt was the way the mouse moved, its hard to explain but if you have used a hard and very flat, smooth surface mouspad, it was kinda like that just something felt maybe refined? -
Iron Clad pad, I think it's like an upgraded Vespula. -
@X2P: never used a aluminium mouse pad before, thought of giving it a try & hope it is as durable as it claims. All this while i am used to the usual sleek feel of hard mats, but still find them too "slippery".After using Ironclad for some time,i find that it hits the sweet spot between sleek glide & control.Like the cool feeling too.
Everyone has their own preference & i was not hoping this thread to turn into a "my $5 mouse pad pwned your $60 piece of aluminium!! lolz!! " argument.Like it? Can afford it? Then buy it & enjoy it,period. -

I use a $10 Xtrac Ripper Medium mouse pad. Works great, hell no I'm not paying $60 for a mousepad.
I'm not a fan of Razer personally. I think they overcharge and release new products under a guise of them being something new when rather they're just rehashes of old mice with new names and skins. -
Already bought it(see sig),definitely enjoy it
.IMO their products are not as bad as claimed, like macbooks are overpriced, yet people still buy them, but thats another topic altogether. Thanks for the feedback anyway guys

Gives the whole work area a nice feel. -
u always have nice toys. -
well just personal opinion , i think hard mats are better because they have pretty flat surface ( unless you bent it of course ) and doesn't wear out faster ( and gets hairy ) compare to some soft mats .
i just wondered why did razer discontinue their exactmat , its a pretty good hardmat and yet not so expensive -
-
i have the vespula(control side) for home and a kabuto for travel, and i bought them off amazon (new) cuz they r cheaper. paid 28 for vespula and 15 for kabuto...
