Just checked the Razer website for updates and they've got an awesome new headset. I'm too lazy to list all the specs, but you can look at them here:

    http://www2.razerzone.com/Megalodon/

The build quality looks good, unlike Razer's previous Barracuda headset, they have an awesome new audio engine, and pretty much everything about it looks great. I'm not sure if I should wait for this, or just get the Astro A40 system ( http://www.astrogaming.com/products/detail/4/A40_Headset/). If I do get the Megalodon I guess I'll write a review.

    EDIT: Btw, they're 7.1 surround sound. o_O Astro A40 only has 5.1.

EDIT2: I like the word Megalodon. <.< Mmmeeegggaaallooodddooonnn. o.o Just seems intimidating.
    SomeGuy: I got a Astro A40!
You: I have an effing Megalodon.

EDIT3: What's better, 7.1 surround, or 5.1 surround with xbox compatibility...and other awesome stuff. Astro also sells replacement parts for their headsets (Mic, earpads, heaband pads, etc.). :D Razer usually doesn't sell replacement parts. Some teflon feet for my Lachesis would be nice (they're not worn out yet, but they probably will...don't think teflon's invincible o.o). T.T

Surround sound headphones are pretty much a scam.

There are multiple speakers and sound drivers and stuff inside each headphone thing. xD I'm too lazy to explain it well, but it's not a scam. o_O

Take the $250 you plan on spending on this headset and buy a 2nd 9800GTX and put your PC on SLI mode.

I would do that if I had a 9800GTX in the first place...or an SLI motherboard...or a computer that's not over 6 years old...or a job. I'd have a job if it wasn't for stupid AP classes. T.T But right now I just have a Rocketfish case with nothing to put in it. <.< But yeah, my HP headset broke into 3 pieces, so I've been looking at headsets.

I think you're getting ahead of yourself now. I saw somewhere that the price was going to be around $150. The SteelSeries 5H v2 headset is very similar, but I read in an article that the sound technology used in these new headphones was the same as what the people in fighter jets would use to hear incoming missles as fast as possible.

How do these new headsets jive with a soundcard? It sounds like they must be doing quite a bit of processing themselves if they are running several speakers.

They have audio processing unit things. o.o The Astro A40 has a really nice one. It's $130 if you buy it alone, but it's only $250 for the headset and the "MixAmp" together (the headset if $200 alone). If I do end up blowing a ridiculous amount of money on a headset, I'll probably go with the A40. It's still good to see that Razer's making good progress with their audio products though.

The audio engine is based on that technology, but I'm pretty sure it's not the same. That would be a bit insane. I'm guessing these are going to go for around $200, I think that was the starting price for the Barracuda headset. The Barracuda had horrible build quality, but these look like they're well made. And that plastic headband looks alot better than that piece of crap that held together the Barracuda headset. I didn't hear any issues about the build quality on their Pirahna headset, so I don't think there's any reason to worry about things like that anymore.

EDIT: Don't think the SteelSeries headset has surround sound. Razer Megalodon has 7.1, Astro A40 has 5.1. I've heard some good things about the Astro headset also. And it's Xbox, PS3, and PS2 compatible. o.o Just have to buy an extra cord for PS3...because nobody uses PS3s. xD

I will buy this most likely if hav ethe Tritton AX360 and am very pleased with them for gaming. If this new headset is made with the ideal of fixing the universal problems of other ones for front and back positioning they'll be great.
But regardless the idea of having multiple speakers still make these headsets enjoyable.

In the end, I need something less disturbing to the environment around me at night.
