Xpad Slim, should help some with you placing it on your lap/bed and helping it not pick up so much dust.

I was thinking more along the line of a soft material.

Put a pillow between your lap and your cooler then.

I use a piece of plywood cut to size. It's cheap, easy to make and works well. When at home, my laptop sits on it all the time, whether it is on the table, the lap or bed.

Other than that Logitech Comfort Lapdesk which I have liked when I have seen it in the shops. Belkin have CushDesk and CushTop . The latter has been around a while.

I recently acquired one of these:

    Choiix Comforter Lapdesk

Hands down one of the best I have tried for sure, it can be used either way and wont block vents but is also plush. I love the thing.

The problem will all these suggestions is that

They are not soft on the laptop and myself (like the ThermaPAK HeatShift Laptop Cooler is)
These are all huge and I want to be able to carry it around in my laptop bag (meaning it has to be very light)

What your looking for doesnt exist. If its soft on the laptop bang youll be over heating. and the only thing that is portable with padding is the Lapinator.

I recommend you be more specific with what you want so its easier for people to suggest things.

Your original post was talking about something to use in bed, so size didn't seem to matter :) And looking at what is available, what you want is almost a contradiction - the padding will add a lot of bulk and weight.

But, adding padding doesn't necessarily help. For my plywood board, I found that by making it a bit bigger than my 15.4" laptop, it fits across my lap better. It also meant the feet sticking out the bottom of the laptop didn't stick into my knees. When I made another one (extra laptop in the house) I made it a bit bigger. I spent several hours on the weekend with this on my lap with no discomfort. This was on the weekend that suggests summer is here (in Australia) and temperature inside was near 30ºC.

In any case, I remembered another laptop pad to consider. The Targus Laptop Portable LapDesk might suit. When searching for this, I also found LapGear which has the Traveler LapDesk. I suspect you will think the first one doesn't have enough padding and the latter is to bulky.

That have little travel table things that are hard on one side and soft on the other and are meant to go on your lap.

I have a Gigabyte G-pad that is made of aluminium and can be folded. So essentially it is small, heavy, hard and has a good cooling effect for something without a fan.
