I can't seem to find any nice 1920x1200 resolution monitors with LED backlights. I truly enjoy how bright and vivid my laptop LED display is, I'm a little worried an external monitor won't look as good? Or is that stretching it? Only LED I can find is Apple's, but that's $800+ I think.
All-in-all, any really good external monitors with great brightness?

you will find no LED panels for <$400.
Heck you won't even find a good quality LCD panel for <$400. You're best bet would be the Dell 2408wfp which is going for 498 + tax right now. For sure the color reproduction will be better than your laptop because every laptop panel uses a TN display. Plus, I hear the 2408 uses a CCFL and LED hybrid to achieve its 108% Color Gamut since normal CCFL technically can't achieve that I'm inclined to believe that claim. -
If you do not mind used you can find a number of PVA/MVA panels for under $400. Used is generally not a bad thing with LCDs as you can ask the seller about defects vs buying a black box.

Probably would have to look on ebay (and yeah I'm looking for new ones w/ warranty). -

This was going for $267 the other day and they usually run specials on it every once in a while. -
Yeah that's one of my favorites, I'm debating between that one and Samsungs one:

Then I realized Dell's is 92% color gamut (Samsung is 82%), same price and same brightness (400 cd/m2). Samsung is free shipping though, lol.
Thanks atb.

I♥RAM, I own that Dell monitor, and I must say that it is awesome. It is a very nice screen, matte finish, and very fast response time. It is a TN panel, but nonetheless it is by far the best bang for the buck 24" screen,
Here is my review of the screen:

If you want any pictures, or any better videos, shoot me a PM, I am sure I could send you something.

Newegg has a special deal on an Acer 1920x1080 21.5" LCD monitor for $199. Can't argue with that resolution! Deal ends 12/24.
-
i dono how you can make a topic of LED panels and turn around and tell me TN panels are great.
I totally thought you wanted a good color reproduction panel. Anyway, the only panel that is decent for cheap is probably the Westinghouse LN24 I think they stopped making those and, personally, I think the black levels leave something to be desired. -
QFT, though the laptop LCD is most likely TN with LED backlit.
-
Alright forget the TN and LED's then. Any other recommendations? <$500? Geez these are too expensive...
-
If you are lucky you might be able to find a hp lp2475w for under $500. Certainly if the Ebay live cashback deal comes back. The hp is IPS I believe.
-
I would say if you want a decent (i.e. non-TN) 24" monitor, the 2408WFP is pretty decent (as well as up to date in all it's connections).
If you look on fleabay, you might also find a 2407WFP-HC which is in warranty for ~2 more years, which is also a great monitor and the ones I have most of(and in terms of the consistency of the monitors I have is way better than the supposedly better-paneled 23" Apple Cinema Displays, which I also have a large quantity of). -
2408WFP is way over the budget...
Right now I'm how wondering bad TN is, I'm not a professional photo editor, I can live with a slightly worse color. I mean seriously $400 can't make me happy? I really like a couple 24" Samsungs but god all this TN talk is making me not wanna buy anything, lol. -
why dont you just go check some of them out in the store first!!
if you're happy with even the cheapest one, then you'd probably be happy with the panels you found within ur budget. -
Stores in NY sell electronics for a significantly higher price, and most of the selection in Best Buy or Circuit City is bland. They also have very crappy support for customers. I'd rather not.
-
Well you can at least get an idea how bad (or not so bad) TN is.
-
I thought the major "bad" part about TN panels was their viewing angle properties. well anyways, like I wrote before - I own a samsung with TN panel and am satisfied.
-
As for me, I own a 2408WFP because I am a graphics designer, gamer, and a future photographer... and because I got it for $350 -
TN really isn't that bad. I think my LED screen on my notebook is fantastic. Even my cheapo Hanns screen which is now showing its age was very nice when I first got it. Then again I've never had a need for such a high end screen.
-
Oh and psygn, 2408WFP for $350 brand new? I am sooo jealous.
-
That is the problem with TN. The color shifts especially on a large panel. If you are happy with your notebook you doubt you will have issues with a decent TN however.
-
hanns g is the way to go, i love my 28" monitor.
-
Having reviewed a great many monitors I'd like to point out that "colour gamut" can be a bit of red herring when it comes to quality. Unless you're looking at high-end screens for photographers and the like, companies always refer to the NTSC colour space (as opposed to superior AdobeRGB) and frankly 108% NTSC is hardly something to shout about. Also, it's worth checking out what monitors come properly calibrated out of the box, since many Dell's (just an example, it's not exclusive to Dell) aren't calibrated properly so look like arse unless you have the proper tools.
Unless you're performing colour sensitive work, most modern TN 24" LCDs are actually pretty good so don't be put off by their less than stellar history. -
Calibration? None that I've seen - and you don't exactly need a degree in art to eye-calibrate even a menu-laden Dell properly. The key to doing it if you don't own a hardware calibrator is is to start from the colour settings and adjust the RGB balance first to get approximately the hue that you think you should have.
Some Applefreaks will tell you that the ACD's come factory calibrated - which is BS, like most talk about the superior quality of stuff from the company. -
Nice flame bite...
-
lmao thank you Vogel, I like the post.

Hi afhistngray... i see you have a m4400. im looking at getting one myself. would you recommend the samsung 245B monitor for this computer as a second screen? im looking at these two. would appreciate any help from anyone? ive read some places that some screens mess up with the 1900x1200 resolution and always reset when powered off... will this combination produce the same result?
-
P.S : reviving an old thread for a completely different question is not a good idea.
Recommend me a 24" monitor <$400. Any LED ones?
