    I've narrowed it down to:

    Dell 2312HM (16:9) - $299 CAD

    Dell 2412M (16:10) - $369 CAD

Since they are exactly the same in terms of gamut/picture quality, is it worth it to throw out another $70 for 120 pixels taller?

Go for the 24". I just got the U2412M and the extra 1" is very helpful vs my Apple Cinema 23" running at the same resolution.

Well I guess it's just a question of aspect ratio.

Personally, I would choose the external monitor with the same aspect ratio as your laptop (assuming your laptop has 1920x1080 resolution)

Having two screens with identical aspect ratios and resolutions can be very helpful in terms of minimizing the points of failure when you do mutilple screen work
