I would like to know how to most efficiently go about using a microphone to record lectures onto a laptop (havent decided on the exact oRne yet, but its a general question).

    1) Do I need some kind of audio compression software?

    2) It would be better to record onto Cd than waste HD space...can I record directly onto CD, or does it need to go onto HD first?

    3) How to adjust gain levels (I have good compact mics)?

I know next to nothing about how to do this,

    Thanks!

Another idea would be to record lectures in audio *and* video onto CD with a mini pc camera attached to the laptop.

I imagine the requirements to record even low res video for long periods of time would be substantially higher than just audio.

Recommendations as to a recording methodology and system requirements would be much appreciated.

As well as a decent quality, good value mini cam suitable for laptops (perched atop the screen would be ideal).
