Here is what I want to do:

I want to record the screen while playing games.

How can I do this? I was thinking perhaps there is some way to play the 360 (I have the old one) on my laptop while using something like Camtasia Studio.

But if I have to, I'll just use a video camera.

edit - I don't have an hdmi port on my xbox 360, just av (that big bulky port). I can't seem to find a av to hdmi... but not sure if thats even what I want.

I'm pretty sure you'll need some sort of video acquisition hardware, the G73's HDMI is output only i think.

IIRC, only the Alienware M17x and M18x have HDMI in. You would need something like this:

    Roxio Game Capture

You said hardware? So I'm guessing I'll need some type of hardware that connects the two? Just not sure what though. I've been googling but I'm not sure exactly what to google.

well, my bro will let me use his m17 but are you sure thats my only option? If possible, I'd rather not pay $99

edit - @saturnotaku Well, this is exactly what I'm looking for actually. Thanks.

I'm still looking for other options if possible

There might be other capture devices that are cheaper, but the bottom line is you would need to buy a separate piece of hardware if you want to import console video to your specific notebook. I pointed to the Roxio device specifically because you said your Xbox doesn't have built-in HDMI. I don't believe there exists an adapter to convert the standard output to HDMI, at least there are none that I could find in a cursory search.

Damn, I got a kinects instead of an elite :(

Well, for future reference, what could I use if I had an elite?

Oh and Xellon, just a question, do you want this to stay in Asus or do you want me to move it to accessories? It has it's palce in bot of those forums, but i think you might get more answers in accessories.

This looks good I think. But It doesn't look like I'd be able to record the screen.

My main thing is recording what I play. So now that I think about it, that "USB-AVCPT USB 2.0 Audio Video Creator Capture DVD Maker Editor Adapter" that I linked too might not be able to do HD......

Perhaps Roxio is my only choice.

Alright, moved it and changed the title accordingly.

With some sort of USB capture device, you should be able to do it with your G73, although your bro's m17x might be better for this.

Heres what you need if you want good video quality.

First you need to buy capture software. This works THE BEST if you want to record in HD. *Note. it does use component, not HDMI.

Hauppauge - HD Personal Video Recorder - HAUP1212

Next you need a way to capture the video you now have on your PC.
XSplit - Going Live is Simple

Right now xsplit is free, at some point they will charge $$$ to use it.
    --------

Setup. Install Hauppauge software. You will now get a video stream of your gaming to your PC. You will still use your standard TV to play the game, as there is a 3 second lag before it encodes to you PC. Once you have the video feed on your PC you use xplit. Xsplit lets you stream whatever is on your PCs screen to the internet. You can adjust what part of your screen is streaming and what part is not.

If your serious about it the best 2 devices are the Hauppauge HD PVR and there new Colossus HD Capture Card.

You need a PC for the 2nd but the first one will work with a laptop.

Great thing about the HDPVR is the pass-through so you still play on your TV w/ no lag but your capturing the footage at the same time.

Thanks for the suggestions, a bit expensive for an amateur like me, but i'm still considering it. Too bad the HD PVR doesn't have HDMI in and out, though i can understand why they aren't there.

Yeah HDMI adds an extra layer of issues (HDCP) so in most cases its good that its not there. If it had both Component & HDMI that would be great but if it was one or the other I think its the better choice to use component.

The other thing worth mentioning about the PVR is that the device itself is doing the compression so you do not have to worry about performance issues with a slower computer.

I would be more worried with the slow USB2.0 bandwidth than the computer speed ;), if i need to encode, my 920xm will do or straight to the i7-2600K in the desktop. If i ever get this, i'll need to get the component cable for my PS3 and put the Wii back on composite to free the plugs for the PS3, not like i'm using the Wii anymore, too bad my desktop is far from the consoles, otherwise i could have gone with the capture card.

A usb external TV tuner card will do the trick.
