I have an extra 60GB 4200 RPM laptop harddrive that was replaces with a 5400RPM one. I'd like to buy an enclosure to make it an extra external harddrive. I haven't really bought anything like this so, do you guys have any recs as in brand types and such? USB v. Firewire?

Also, I'll be leaving my laptop on for...extended periods of time (read pretty much 24/7) so, any recs for a cooling mat? Are they even effective? Do I need to buy a certain for my laptop? It's a 13.3" Fujitsu S2110.

    Thanks in advance!

I just bought an s2110 myself, and I don't think a cooling pad is necessary. I had an old Inspiron 8100 that I left on for extended periods (like weeks at a time) and it is still running after over 4 years, and it was much hotter than the s2110 has been for me. The s2110 seems to have quite good air flow and a good ventilation system. I wouldn't worry about a cooling pad.

I also purchased an enclosure with my Fujitsu. It has worked well in the short time I've had it, and it is quite small. Check it out here. Or just read some of the NewEgg reviews while searching for a 2.5" enclosure - there are a lot to choose from.

I like vantec's products. Have had 2 enclosures from them and they have been flawless.

I have the plain looking model. The drive remains cool in it even under intense usage, because it's all aluminum. The newer models are also nice (choice of black, blue, red)

As for cooling pads. If you are only using your laptop for reading and such, I don't think it is necessary to use one, unless you feel it getting really hot on the underside. IS IT? From my little experience with some pads, I have always found the ones that I got to be noisy and annoying.

Have you left your S2110 on for extended (over night?) periods of time? I use mine for an hour and the hot are that flows out of the side vents is pretty hot so that got me kind of worried. Prior I had a Sony PCGFRV25 which I left on for 27/7 pretty much ALL THE TIME, it might get turned off maybe once or twice a month. It still works okay, but I don't know, I just don't want to screw up my precious new laptop :D

Well, I'll be using the laptop for word processing and internet surfing. But I will also be leaving it on for downloading and stuff with big files so I'll probably be leaving it on connected to the internet for downloading 24/7
