This is a Kingston 2g flash memory stick, and I needed to reformat my computer, so I tried to format and copy an image of windows XP onto it, it wasn't successful after all, and now when I try to open this memory stick, it won't open and says "Please insert a disk into driver F".

And when I right click > format > capacity "unknown", FAT system "FAT, allocation unit size "Default" > unchecked quick format > click ok > it says "Windows was unable to complete the format"

Under the "format removable disk" menu, there is no other options in the drop down bars.

Is my memory stick gone forever??? Any ideas?

Did you install drivers for the memory card reader?

    Hi.

how big is the memory stick?

If it`s under 4gb run this program on it, it will wipe and test it, then try a normal format.

    Regards

    John.

    http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Traveler-Drive-DTI-2GB/dp/B000ERAON2, my stick

Lithus, not sure what the memory card reader you spoke of. Please specify how I can check on that.

Tinder: I have tried to run that prog, no luck. Here is some details.

It shows on F:\ Not formatted or no media" under drive
I have tried both read stability and write/read tests, and all the length option (which I don't think will matters), but when I click starts, it shows "Test fail: Invalid handle" under log output if I select either "as logical drive" or "as physical device"; and it shows "file and device error: parameter is incorrect" if I select use temporary file.

Nevermind. I thought you were using a memory card, like SD or CompactFlash.

    Hi.

Do you have any other usb memory sticks to try, to rule out driver problems.

    Regards

    john.

I should probably point this out, but anything > 2GB ought to be formatted FAT32... if it's saying FAT, it might/probably won't work.

I've noticed that sometimes the newer Kingston USB keys don't work when first detected but work once you unplug and replug it.

Mine is not greater than 2G. It's 2G, or slightly less as in most drives. And I am positive it's not due to any connection problem.

My flash drives was formatted in FAT32 file system to desktop PC and works ok. At the notebook when I start copying files from HDD to flash report some erorr and stop copying. Than flash not recognized until flash not reconnected to notebook.

Arg, now I'm in the same boat, one of my microSD Kingston 2GB sticks started having issues reading files. I was able to format it just fine, but as soon as I did a read/write test with CheckUSB it just died and the OS says there's no media. :(

Finally figured out a way, so I am hoping sharing with you guys who need this.

When I plug the usb in, it automatically comes up with format option window, IGNORE it, since it doesn't work (at least in my case).

Instead, right click on "My computer", then "Manage", then "Disk management", and you will see all the physical drives (actual hard drive of your computer and the plugged in flash drives), right click on the drive you would like to format (click on the "small volume..." option), then select FAT32 format, and wait until formatting is done.

BOOM! It works like a charm again. Hope this helps.
