I need an external HDD, preferably portable one for saving, and restoring info to/from my ThinkPad. We have all purchased an IBM because we care for reliability, so who better to ask this question - Any suggestions?

Well, basically, you have two options:

    1. a laptop drive housed in an external usb enclosure OR
    2. a desktop drive housed in an external usb enclosure.

The laptop drive in an enclosure will still be small enough to slip into a shirt pocket but you will get better value with the 3.5 inch desktop drive. An enclosure for this will be slightly larger than the size of a paperback novel.

For e.g. I recently bought a 40 gig laptop drive and case for $63 and also bought a 3.5 inch 160 gig desktop drive, $40, and case for $30. So you see what I mean ... depends on your needs.
