I'm looking for a laptop lock that will deter the common thief.. I understand that if a person is determined, he or she will be able to break the lock. How are Kenginston locks? They seem to sell well.. but also seem to be defeated rather easily?

they are all useless if the thief carries around a wire cutter.... and then brings the laptop home to pick the lock (if u use a key) or 30 minutes to try all the combinations...

they are defeated easily.... just a deterrent to prevent the casual person from becoming greedy when seeing ur laptop unattented to...

i think the only reason to use a lock is to make your laptop less "steal-able" than the next one which is reason enough to steal one.

I'm a college student and was looking for something that would keep my laptop safe for the few minutes when I might need to get a drink or use the bathroom when I'm at the library. Virtually every review and thread on laptop locks has been in agreement that laptop locks are at most a deterent. With that in mind I got the following Belkin http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834999204 and am pretty happy with it.

I have read hundreds of user reviews and the combo locks kinda scare me since many of them seem to change their combination randomly. Cable thickness doesn't seem to matter much since even them best ones can be cut with good quality wire cutters. So while this lock could be broken away from the laptop and the wire could easily be cut, so can all the others. This one is inexpensive, keyed and very portable in its nylon bag. So thats the most I think I can expect from a laptop lock.

One question about that lock dufog, I read 2-3 reviews on Newegg which said that it had an "exposed hinge". Whats that?

and will it work on my xps m1530's kensington security slot?

Master Lock makes a nice backpack lock that looks like a very secure carabiner and uses a 3 digit combination. It's usually very inexpensive and can be easily combined with a cable. They also make a TSA approved cable lock. I found one at Home Depot and purchased the TSA approved version at Amazon. Both cost less than $10 US.

Keebz, the hinge they are talking about is the part that inserts into the lock slot(Mine is the XPS1530 like yours so yes it fits). I guess they are saying someone could punch out the hinge pin but it seems to me that cutting the cable would be less obvious and less loud than banging an awl into a hinge pin if you were in a public place. So, again if you are really only expecting this as a deterent I don't see that much of a problem.

I got a cool one was only $10 or $20 on sale with woot.com or one of those super deal sites. It was posted here on the forums.

Its a cable lock and has a combo but whats cool about it is that it has a very loud audible alarm too that will trigger if the cable is cut or can be set for motion sensitivity too. As long as your not leaving the area this is a good way to go and it would really deture somebody from stealing it as everybody will hear the alarm and it beeps at you to let you know its going to go off if you move it some.

I second the being wary about the Defcon CL-- just yesterday, my roommate's Defcon CL just gave up on him and stopped opening. Luckily, he had it locked in our dorm room so it was perfectly safe where it was until he got hold of some wire cutters. I don't know if this just happens to be 2 people with the same problem, or a widespread thing with that lock, but I thought I'd just toss in my 2 cents.
